Overview

Acknowledged as the region’s premier producer, now is the time to take Mission Hill Family Estate and the Okanagan region to the world wine stage.  To make this happen, we require a Managing Director with an track record of building an international, new world luxury wine brand, one that will lead and develop our team in all strategic and tactical aspects of the business.  International market credibility as a global spokesperson, combined with a track record managing winemaking, vineyard operations, marketing and further enhancing the guest experience at our showpiece winery are essential.  Additional areas of focus are the direct to consumer business (tasting room, direct sales, and e‐commerce) as well as winery hospitality, which includes management of the Terrace Restaurant and annual concert series held in the on‐site Amphitheatre. The Managing Director will also be charged with providing leadership to the industry trade groups.

 

 

 


Core Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Direction

·         Establish strategic and operational direction for the business that will position Mission Hill in international markets, driving the reputation and interest in Okanagan wine, delivering the highest and best use for the almost 1000 acres of vineyards we farm. 

·         To further accelerate our organic farming and explore biodynamic farming, all with the aim of continuously raising the bar on quality and uniqueness of our wines and region. 

·         Develop and implement a 5 year business development strategy.

·         Work in partnership with the Chairman & CEO to establish appropriate goals, objectives and further training and development objectives for the business and functional responsibilities for the operating teams.

·         P & L and asset responsibility to drive profitability and ensure sound asset management which includes appropriate allocation of capital and landholding investments.

 

Brand & Sales Management

·         Lead and focus the Company’s various marketing resources including on-site winery marketing to build and leverage the brand and its brand equity and successfully launch new brands and services to the market that further enhance and exceed the customer’s expectations.

·         Oversee the development and management of the global allocation process for limited production wines.

·         Manage sales distributor to drive growth of the entire wine portfolio.

 

Operations & Vineyard Leadership

·         Work with the Chief Winemaker and General Manager of Sebastian Farms to develop strategic planting plans for optimal fruit productivity and quality.

·         Develop strategies and continuously assess and evaluate the wine production to ensure “world stage” standards on process, equipment and product quality.

·         Accountable for all company grape procurement and lease agreements.

·         Ensure that product life cycles and the appeal of product and services are continuously monitored and regularly upgraded to maximize and exceed customer expectations.

·         Regularly interface with and assure effective communication between marketing, sales, operations, vineyard management, production, distribution, guest relations and other relevant functional teams in order to ensure a smooth and efficient flow of product and services to customers.

 

People Leadership

·         Attract and retain and develop high caliber team members with the intent to train and develop the company’s future leaders in order to instill core values and a culture that reinforces and promotes performance in a focused team environment and encourages achievement of results that were never thought possible.

·         Assure positive level of employee conduct and corporate climate throughout the winery and specifically within vineyard teams, production and bottling, and guest relations.

·         Work with/develop partnerships with corporate support teams/key Senior Managers in linked business units (i.e. Canadian Distribution).

·         Ensure facility is operated in compliance with all legal and regulations.

·         Other related duties and tasks as assigned

 

 

 

Minimum Requirements (Experience, Education, Qualifications, Skills, Abilities)

Education

·         Bachelor’s degree with coursework emphasis on economics. 

 

Qualifications/Experience

·         Proven track record of success in Winery General Management. 

·         Minimum 12 years of wine industry strategic marketing and sales experience within well regarded wine companies with premium and luxury wine portfolios within the same company.

·         Experience repositioning and redefining a brand for success internationally.

·         Previous success and experience in international marketing and brand development with luxury wines including acting as a spokesperson. Understanding of global fine wine distribution channels.

·         Experience with luxury goods and brands beyond wines – must be able to leverage experience outside of wine industry to bring creative and innovative strategies to brand building.

·         Demonstrated ability to think globally and strategically to turn information into effective strategies and drive business results. 

·         Experience with strategic international mergers & acquisitions, including negotiating transactions and ensuring legal compliance.

·         Experience creating and managing strategic contractual agreements.  Experience structuring and negotiating unique and creative wine sales and distribution agreements, including handling/managing legal aspects of transactions.

·         Demonstrated ability to create unique consumer experiences to create consumer excitement and brand loyalty.

·         Demonstrated experience working directly with a business owner in a flat, entrepreneurial

Organization.

·         Specific demonstrated success in leading a winemaking team.

·         Proven ability to launch successful new brands.

·         Previous responsibility for driving P&L with emphasis on cost control and people management.

·         Excellent oral and written communication skills

·         Proficient with personal computers and business applications
