Devonian Coast Wineries owns and operates three distinctly different award winning wineries in Nova Scotia, Canada with total production of well over 100,000 cases per year.

The largest, Jost Vineyards, is nestled on the beautiful Northumberland shores of Nova Scotia. Jost Vineyards produces world-class wines from some of the most distinctive premium-quality grapes in North America. As the undisputed leader and longest operating winery in the Atlantic region for the past 30 years, we aspire to capture the true character and essence of our unique terroir in every bottle of wine we produce.

The second winery, Gaspereau Vineyards is a premium boutique operation in the Annapolis Valley region of the Province. In 2012, it was rated number 16 among the over 400 wineries in Canada.

The third operation is in its infancy and the goal is for the Devonian team to shape it into a game changer in style and quality for wineries in the province.

Our winemaking and viticulture teams believe the best wines are made in the vineyard. They are responsible for the production and processing of grapes from over 200 acres spread across several distinct vineyards throughout Nova Scotia. The Opportunity.

We are looking for a Viticulture and Oenology Intern to support our team during the 2015 Harvest at both locations in the Annapolis Valley as well as in Malagash in Northern Nova Scotia. We are seeking an enthusiastic, enrolled student or recent graduate in Viticulture and Oenology to begin work in August 2015 and complete work in mid-late November (negotiable).   The successful candidate will work closely with our winemakers.

 

Requirements: 

Enrolled in/graduate of an Oenology and Viticulture program (College, Certificate or BSc), although exceptions always apply.   Experience working in a wine cellar and/or forklift experience is an asset but not a requirement.

 

Successful candidates are:

·      highly motivated and have a strong work ethic

·      mulit-taskers and can work well in a team

·      motivated and passionate about making high quality wine

·      able to perform physical-demanding work on a regular basis

·      able to lift 50 lbs and are able to work at heights  

·      willing to work long hours including weekends (often 7days a week, often>60 hours/week)

 

Job description and responsibilities:

  • Cleaning and sterilizing winery equipment and tanks
  • Working the crush pad when grapes are received, including running crusher/destemmer, grape elevator and operating the presses.
  • Filling, emptying and thoroughly cleaning presses (horizontal basket and bladder)
  • Performing pump-overs/punch-downs, red fermentation tank digouts and racking
  • Performing basic laboratory operations (acid-base titrations, use of and calibration of pH meters, refractometry, ebulliometry and chromatography)
  • Sugar and temperature monitoring, inoculations, juice/fermentation/wine additions
  • maintaining an organized, clean and safe cellar and laboratory
  • ability to work within the standard operating procedures established in our cellar/crushpad

 

Pay Structure:

  • $11.00-$15.00/hour, based on experience.
