  B.C. Coast, British Columbia

VINEYARD OPERATOR AND ASSISTANT WINEMAKER

We are looking for someone to take over the vineyard and winery operations of a small, pedigreed estate winery on the coast of British Columbia.  Our vineyard is fifteen years old, and we have an established reputation for producing wines of character and consistent quality.

This position is the core of a small, dedicated team operating under the overall direction of the owners.  Starting date can be any time up to September of 2015.

For seasoned operators, this is an opportunity to “scale down” or bring more diversity to their work.

Candidates newer to the industry have the opportunity to learn all aspects of running an estate winery.  Fundamental knowledge and experience in grape-growing and winemaking is necessary, but additional training would be provided to candidates with good potential to grow into the responsibilities.

An opportunity also exists in marketing and sales which may be of interest to the applicant, or to a partner or spouse.

Depending on requirements, on-site accommodation may be available.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Vineyard:

In consultation with owners, prepare annual vineyard management plan including budget, material, and staffing requirements.

Train, assign tasks to, and supervise supplementary vineyard workers.

Organize and execute all operations, including pruning, tying, suckering, shoot thinning, training, tucking, lateral removal, leaf removal, crop thinning, etc. on a timely basis.

Implement effective spray program.

Maintain and repair vineyard tools and equipment.

Monitor vineyard, identify and address issues, and prepare crop estimates.

Organize harvest, including logistics and staffing.

Winery:

In consultation with owners, develop programs for individual products.

Organize and execute winemaking including fermentation, additions, racking, fining, lab analysis, filtering and bottling.

Monitor wine and identify potential issues.

Maintain high standard of sanitation in winery.

Maintain winery equipment (pumps, presses etc.) and premises.

Maintain winemaking records.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Formal training in viticulture and winemaking and/or hands-on experience in vineyard and winery operations.

Knowledge of premium cool-climate grape growing practices including canopy management, nutrient management, integrated pest management, etc.

Awareness of sustainable management principles and practices.

Ability to operate and maintain farm equipment.

Experience in planning, organization and supervision.

Good observational, diagnostic and problem-solving skills.

Attention to detail, high standards, and ability to multi-task.

Good communications skills and ability to work within a close team.

Reliability, integrity and a strong work ethic.

Flexibility and ability to work long hours at critical times.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
