Winemaker (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

Join a dynamic and innovative winery in Muskoka! We’re looking for an experienced, energetic and motivated winemaker to join our team. We’re a unique cranberry farm, specializing in wines made from indigenous fruit. Current production is approximately 45,000 litres of wine annually, sold throughout Ontario and overseas.We are a family owned and operated business offering flexibility, collaboration and variety to someone with the passion and drive to help us continue growing.

Duties and responsibilities

Winemaking

- organize/coordinate/perform winemaking duties including pressing, fementation, racking, filtering, sensory analysis, lab analysis, blending and bottling

- Forecast, plan and budget wine production to meet sales targets and operational goals

- Research & order supplies & ingredients while effectively managing supplier relationships

- Lead innovative product development and then scale production for successful products

- Plan & conduct trials & experimentation toward solving technical challenges

- Conduct occasional wine tastings, info sessions, staff familiarization & presentations

Packinghouse/Value-added Production

- Supervise packinghouse operations during the harvest season, specifically setting up equipment, hiring, scheduling and supervising seasonal staff, managing quality, keeping records and meeting orders

- Organize the packaging and labelling of other value added products

Shipping/Receiving/Warehouse Management

- Manage logistics including shipping wholesale & retail orders and receiving purchases & supplies

- Organize warehouse and manage warehouse inventor

General

- Hire, train, schedule & supervise seasonal/occasional staff, as required

- Understand and implement food safety standards

- Ensure a clean and safe workplace

- Keep excellent daily records

Qualifications

- Post-secondary qualifications in wine making

- Fork lift operator

- Sound computer knowledge and detail oriented toward record keeping

- Food safety training an asset

- Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Working conditions

Working conditions & work hours vary seasonally. Weekend work is required during the harvest season and occasionally at other times of year. Supervision varies from working alone to managing a large, seasonal packinghouse staff. This job takes place mostly indoors.

Physical requirements

This job is physically demanding, requiring heavy lifting and bending.
