The Roost Wine Co. near Collingwood, Ontario is seeking someone to fill a full-time, seasonal contract position as a vineyard and winery worker. The Roost is a new boutique winery, tasting room and vineyard opening summer 2017. We believe that wine is made in the vineyard and we believe in working with attention to detail, passion for the land, and a great sense of humour.
The winery’s small scale allows the right candidate to experience many aspects of operating a small winery and vineyard. This is a dynamic, multi-purpose position for a keen self-starter looking for experience in the wine industry. The position involves working closely with the vineyard manager and winemaker as an assistant in the vineyard, tasting room and cellar, as the season demands. The position begins May 7th and ends October 20th. It includes, (but is not limited to):
- Pruning, tying, training, thinning vines
- Repairing trellising and fencing as required
- General maintenance at the winery including grounds-keeping
- Stepping in to work the tasting room as emergency float staff during times of unexpected demand
- Working with the winemaker in the cellar doing maintenance, cleaning, crush prep while adhering to the highest level of cleanliness and sanitation at all times
- Assisting with inventory maintenance and shipping/receiving
- Bird-net deployment and temporary deer fence installation
- Harvesting as part of a team during crush season
- Assisting during crush bringing in grapes, weighing, loading the press, and performing cellar-hand duties as required
The ideal applicant will possess:
- Passion for the wine industry and agriculture
- Experience in the industry or enology/viticultural graduate preferred, but not required
- Comfortable working around and using machinery
- Excellent awareness and adherence to workplace health and safety at all times
- Willingness to learn and ask questions if in doubt
- Must be able to lift 50lbs
- Must be comfortable with physical labour and being outside in a variety of conditions
- Able to work as both part of a team and independently
- Takes direction easily and has excellent communication skills
- Is reliable, responsive, pro-active and takes a lot of pride in their work
- Has completed Smart Serve Ontario training, including the new retail module
- Possesses a valid driver’s license, which is legal in Canada
- Must be a permanent resident of Canada or possess a valid Canadian working holiday visa
