We are a well-equipped winery in the first few years of development and are looking for a winemaker to help lead our growth and development over the next few years.
This is an ideal opportunity for a passionate winemaker to join a smaller start-up, quality-focused winery in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. We are looking for a self-motivated and entrepreneurial winemaker with education and experience in, and committed to small-batch winemaking (single varietals and select blends) as we grow to an anticipated max. production of 3000-4000 cases.
Vineyard/viticultural experience much preferred.
Applicants should have/be:
- Degree or certificate in winemaking/oenology with proven experience of 3+ years/vintages under their belt
- Participate in planning winery production and plantings for future vintages in conjunction with management/owners
- Hands-on approach & problem solving skills; ability to lead production independently and as part of a small team
- Technical expertise with solid understanding of winemaking techniques and chemistry; familiarity with winemaking styles to take utmost advantage of each vintage in small-batch environment
- Responsible for the overall production procedures in compliance with VQA regulations and AGCO rules as well as relevant health and safety regulations
- Ability to communicate with and manage vineyard worker(s) and seasonal winery staff
- Evaluate vines and fruit through the growing season; facilitate top-quality fruit purchases and establishment of those in our own vineyards (approx. 6-7 acres)
- Perform cellar functions throughout the year - testing, racking, fining, filtration, blending, bottling etc.
- Responsible for sourcing winery equipment and supplies
- Physically fit and ability to lift 50lbs or as may normally be required in winery environment
- Ability to operate and familiarity with farm machinery (tractor, sprayer, forklift, etc.); related licenses a plus
- Able to operate winery machinery such as crusher/destemmer, bladder and basket press, glycol chiller, pumps, etc.
- Ability to work 6-7 days and flexible/longer hours during peak periods (harvest etc.)
- Represent the winery in various PR/marketing events as may be required in conjunction with management/owners
- Focus on organization, cleanliness, quality control and safety
- Ability to legally work in Canada
- A valid drivers license
Salary and benefits commensurate with qualifications and experience, with the ability to grow with the winery. Salary based on an average 40-hour work week.
