The British Columbia Wine Institute, based in Kelowna, BC, is recruiting a full-time Media Relations Specialist to join its team. The BCWI is responsible for the Marketing, Communications and Advocacy of the BC Wine Industry and media relations is an integral part of the success of the organisation. The position based in Kelowna will develop, manage and execute media activities in support of the annual strategic plan.
Specifically the successful candidate will:
- Develop and execute the annual media strategy and plan in line with the annual strategic marketing, communications and advocacy plan.
- Foster a positive public image for the BCWI, BC Wine Industry, wine producers and BC VQA wines.
- Foster positive, working relationships with the media and public opinion leaders in the food and beverage and tourism sectors and act as the primary spokesperson for the Institute to this clientele.
- Develop and execute proactive and reactive media strategies.
- Research, write and distribute media releases, fact sheets, story starters and backgrounders.
- Maintain up-to-date press kits and fact sheets.
- Manage social media accounts in line with the strategic plan (twitter.com/winebcdotcom, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, etc.).
- Maintain a contact list for mainstream and industry media.
- Respond to media enquiries in a timely and efficient manner.
- Create and host domestic and international media tours.
- Provide media training and media relations support to the BCWI Executive, Board of Directors and BCWI membership when applicable.
- Monitor and produce monthly reports of media coverage of the BCWI and the wine industry.
The ideal candidate will be degree-qualified, with a minimum of five years’ media relations experience, bringing existing relationships with wine and tourism media to the role. The successful candidate must have a valid BC driver’s license, BC Serving It Right certification and be able to travel as the schedule requires, evenings and weekends from time to time.
Compensation: $47,000 - $53,000, plus benefits in line with BCWI policy.
