Viticulturist - Northern Vineyards (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

Role Overview: 
The Viticulturist in the Northern Vineyards will continue to build upon the Von Mandl Family Estates Viticulture program in the Northern Okanagan, including in Kelowna and Naramata, British Columbia.     Building upon our ultra-premium viticulture program, this is a specialized role to provide focus growing exceptional, world class Pinot Noir and Riesling and expertise in organic growing methods. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Develop a specialized viticulture program that will continue to drive the production of Pinot Noir and Riesling to the highest possible quality. This program will include functions such as pruning methodology, canopy management, and shoot and cluster thinning. 

  •  Ensure viticultural practice achieves target yields and quality tiers on a block by block basis.Monitor vineyards for phenology, soil and vine health, and pest & diseases.

  • Provide spray and nutrient programs that are sustainable and evolving towards organic viticulture.

  • Develop sustainable vineyard floor practices including mechanical weed control, composting and cover crop management.

  • Implement detailed irrigation management programs.

  • Establish and maintain working relationship with all company winemakers to realize the aim of producing world class wine.  

  • Assess vineyards and provide viticultural work orders and decisions to Vineyard Operations Team to execute. 

  • Conduct research on current issues or problems and provide recommendations for their resolution.

  • Ensure all work directed to be carried out and all nutrient and spray programs complies with all provincial and federal regulations and should be aimed at continuous improvement in vineyard sustainability programs. 

  • Supervise the work of temporary vineyard technicians as required.  

  • Track all viticulture programs on computer databases for analysis and review for continuous improvement and quality.  

  • Participate in fruit maturity sampling programs and related harvest activities.

  • Carry out field trials and cooperate with research organizations on industry research projects.

     

    Qualifications: 

  • Tertiary degree or Post Graduate Diploma in Viticulture or related Agricultural Science from a respected and recognized University.

  • Minimum of 10 years viticulture experience, preferably in environments managing a minimum of 100 acres over multiple sites. 

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience managing viticulture programs specialized in Pinot Noir and Riesling. 

  • Proven experience in both conventional and organic farming, including soil cultivation, organic weed management, adapting and transitioning conventional vineyards to organics. 

  • Minimum of 5 years, hands on, Vineyard Management experience, including leading and developing a team is an asset.

  • Experience working in partnership with vineyard managers on multiple sites with the potential to grow as the estates grow.

  • High degree of information technology literacy.

  • Valid Driver’s license and clean driving record.
