Full Time

  Avondale Sky Winery (http://www.AvondaleSky.com)

Newport Landing, Hants County, Nova Scotia

Avondale Sky Winery is seeking a dynamic, personable individual to join our team as Vineyard Manager.  Our winery located about 45 minutes from Halifax, just outside Windsor, NS.  We have a young business but are growing rapidly and winning many awards. Since great wine begins in the vineyard, they will maintain the highest standards of quality at all stages.

Responsibilities:

We are looking for someone who enjoys working outside in a job that encompasses all aspects of vineyard operations throughout the lifecycle of the vine; from spring pruning to fall harvest. As vineyard manager, you are able to work independently and make sound decisions quickly. You will hire and train vineyard and harvest employees, organize daily work activities, prepare for approval and implement the annual vineyard plan and budget, maintain equipment, as well as supervise a team of vineyard workers.  In consultation with our winemaker you will, ensure utilization of appropriate integrated pest management, ongoing vine and canopy management, maintain records of crop data and co-ordinate harvest.  As we are a small winery, there will be times when it will be necessary for you to assist with retail and marketing activities.  Because of the nature of the vine and grape growth cycle, some evening and weekend work will be required.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as a strong attention to detail. A team player, you must have a willingness to continually learn, be able to manage multiple projects and juggle shifting priorities, resolve conflicts, as well as be a positive role model.  You should be able to operate and evaluate general maintenance requirements for all farm equipment, uphold and promote safe practices through training and awareness of company policies and have a sound knowledge of viticulture practices. You must possess current certification in pesticide application, First Aid and CPR and WHMIS.  A valid driver’s license and a good driving record are essential.

Working conditions:

You must be physically fit, able to lift 40 pounds repeatedly, and work outside in potentially inclement weather.  Additionally, overtime and weekend work is required at times.

40 hours a week but flexibility required

Start Date: May 2014 onward

Compensation: To be based upon experience and qualifications.
