Black Hills Estate Winery (www.blackhillswinery.com) is a very prestigious and successful cult winery operating on the famed Black Sage Road between Oliver and Osoyoos, B.C. in Canada. Under the craftsmanship of our winemaking team, these wines have consistently sold out each year in less than a week.

Current production of Black Hills Estate Winery is approx. 5,000 cases per year. It is the intention of the ownership group to grow this to a 10,000 case per year operation over the next 5 years.

 

Black Hills Estate Winery is recruiting for the position of Vineyard Manager. The Vineyard Manager will be in charge of the entire day-to-day operation of the Black Hills Vineyard. This includes the current 27-acre vineyard property owned by Black Hills and up to 27 additional acres that will be under our future management. The Vineyard Manager will work very closely with the existing team of Winemaker Graham Pierce and Assistant Winemaker Steve Carberry. The individual hired will be a team player, a leader, and a self-starter who can create positive long term working relationships with all employees, suppliers, trade associations and the local community.

 

The Vineyard Manager will first and foremost be passionate about growing the best wine grapes in the country. This person will understand our Terroir, and will be ecstatic about the opportunity to work with our existing vineyard and taking it to the next level. The Vineyard Manager will have a broad range of proven skills in Vineyard operations and have a good understanding of how his/her Viticultural activities have an impact on the wine-making operations. This is a “hands on” position where the Vineyard Manager can expect to do physical work in the vineyard throughout the year, and even pitch in to help the winery staff in a wide variety of tasks at various times of the year.

 

 

General duties for this position include:

  • Hands on involvement in every facet of the vineyard operation, including pruning, tucking, thinning, harvesting, etc.
  • Planning, budgeting and Managing  the operation of the Vineyard including all expansion logistics
  • Recruiting temporary Vineyard help and managing all Vineyard staff work schedules, tasks and activities
  • Managing and approving all purchases for the Vineyard
  • Approve use of trades for maintenance and service
  • Ensuring that the Winemaker has the resources required to continue to execute the high quality wine program.
  • Proudly show off the vineyard, as requested,  to media, VIP’s, investors and customers
  • Generate strong leadership skills that can generate enthusiasm and build team spirit

Education and Experience

·         Although not imperative, a degree or certificate in Viticulture from an accredited and recognized academic institution would be favorable.

·         Minimum of 3-5 years of Vineyard working experience within the wine industry or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

 

General Comments

 

·         Vineyard Manager Candidates must have the necessary legal documentation to work in Canada.

·         This position reports directly to both the Vineyard Manager and the President of the company

 

Hours of work and compensation

This is anticipated to be a position that will be full time, year-round position. Compensation will be commensurate with experience. Ideally the candidate will already be living in the Okanagan and ready to commence work immediately.
