Assistant Winemaker (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

As Assistant Winemaker you will work in partnership with our winemakers and cellar tam to ensure wine quality is maintained at all stages of the production process. You will create and provide cellar work tickets to the cellar supervisor for scheduling, updating all required wine tracking systems in a timely fashion and making recommendations for general wine processing. 

Your key responsibilities and duties are as follows: 

  • Assist winemakers in preparation of blends, fining trial etc, and VQA submissions, to include all paper work for VQA submissions.
  • Attend Daily Production and Winemaking meetings
  • Continuously evaluate the efficiency of operations against expectations and plans during vintage and outside of vintage
  • Take the lead on ISO/HACCP for the cellars
  • Schedule all required lab work, review and recommend follow up action
  • Participate in monthly tasting of VQA and Commercial wines
  • Responsible with Cellar incidents & investigation, reports and follow up
  • Manage and Issue PO's for harvest RM's
  • Taste incoming bulk wines evaluate chemistry for unloading approval; approve unloading;
  • Participate in Crush Crew pre-harvest training
  • Fill in and assist the commercial product administrator
  • Assist with hiring staff and managing the vintage house

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Post Graduate Certificate or Degree in Oenology and Viticulture
  • 2 years winery cellar/vineyard experience
  • Strong understanding and ability to use technology
  • Working knowledge of any or all of the following (ISO, HACCP, 5S, JD Edwards, Compliant Pro) an asset.
  • Valid Forklift Operator Certificate an Asset
  • Level I or II First Aid Certificate an Asset
  • Strong commitment to quality with attention to detail.
  • Results orientated with an ability to prioritize
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Candidate must be hands on, dependable, and self-starting.
  • Good problem solving abilities along with basic logistic skills required.
  • Knowledge of safe cellar practices, including safe handling of chemicals.
  • Ability to be trained in confined space entry process and procedures.
  • Knowledge of winery cellar operating procedures.
  • Teamwork and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work shift work including weekends  
  • Ability to understand and perform mathematic calculations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Maintain an organized work place.
  • Ability to lift 55 lbs.
