Cellar Master & Oenologist (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

We have a full time position available for the right applicant that encompasses cellar skills, warehouse managment, quality control, and laboratory skills. Start date for this position is November 1st, 2015, or sooner if available.

The ideal candidate should be energetic, detail-oriented, and hard-working. Joining our winemaking team, the incumbent will work closely with our winemaker, Pascal Madevon, in every aspect of the winemaking process at our new state of the art, gravity flow winemaking facility, complete with a basket press and Bucher Oscillys Destemmer.

Culmina Family Estate Winery is an ultra-premium-focused, boutique family-run winery estate in the South Okanagan of British Columbia. Conceived in 2007, Don, Elaine and Sara Triggs started with a simple goal: to make the highest quality wines possible from their family's own estate. Channeling their lifelong passion and resources into their new property, Culmina represents their commitment to excellence, as well as their desire to craft icon quality wines reflective of their origins. Since opening its doors in 2013, Culmina has released a small portfolio of wines to both critical and consumer acclaim, with consistent ratings from reviewers across Canada.

Responsibilities for the incumbent include the following:  

  • Maintaining winery hygiene, including the sanitisation of tanks and equipment
  • Transferring and racking tanks
  • Preparing and Adding Ingredient additions
  • Operating winery equipment (pumps, de-stemmer, press, etc) 
  • Carrying out daily pump overs (during vintage)
  • Conducting basic lab analysis testing (Acidity, Ph, VA, So2, etc.)
  • Monitoring fermentations (during vintage) as well as collecting and logging daily fermentation data (density, temperature, etc)
  • Operating a forklift (stacking barrels, moving must from container to tank)
  • Carrying out barrel operations (filling, topping, racking)
  • Participate in regular sensory tastings
  • Support the logistical management of both barrels and case goods using our Winery Management software

Requirements are as follows: 

  • Canadian citizenship or Permanent Residency
  • Post-secondary university education in Winemaking or similar equivalent
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to multi-task
  • Significant hands-on vintage and cellar experience
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Ability to work within a compact team
  • Ability to work long hours (during vintage and whenever else required)
  • An excellent work ethic, reliability and integrity 
  • A proven track record of achieving and maintaining high standards
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to safely lift up to 25 kg
  • Strong forklift skills are a must, but Culmina will provide fork lift training to get certified, if necessary
  • A current drivers license
