Lab Technician (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

Lab Technician

Burrowing Owl Estate Winery is 40,000 case mid-sized wine producer located in the South Okanagan, British Columbia producing premium wines from Estate grown fruit.  We are now hiring for the full time position of Lab Technician.  Standard responsibilities include,

  • Working with established lab procedures, obtaining samples, perform chemical analysis, instrumental analysis, and preparation-standardization of reagents to monitor and ensure quality in the winemaking process. Wet chemistry analysis include acidity, pH, free and total sulfur, volatile acidity, alcohol, sorbate, ascorbic acid concentration, residual sugar and malic acid determination.\

  •  Conduct Quality analysis during bottling.  Evaluate and approve incoming bottling materials.

  • Records lab analysis results and update data to computer system

  • Performs maintenance projects and other assignments to ensure optimum clean conditions of the Lab, monitoring and maintaining chemical and operating inventory.

  • Evaluates filterability of wine through turbidity test and performs necessary analysis for final tank approval prior to bottling.

  • Produces necessary paperwork and collect samples for sensory analysis of Winemaking department for wine bottling approval.

  • Perform experimental trials for finning, blending and winemaking additions.

  • Participates in continuing educational programs when available, to enhance job performance and knowledge.

  • Assists in the training of temporary and new laboratory employees to achieve a highly skilled and efficient work group.

  • Understands Lab and facilities hazardous materials and safety procedures for Burrowing Owl Winery and adhere to this procedures whenever are applicable.

 

Education/Experience/Skills: 

  • Education: Diploma or degree in Enology, Biological Science or Chemistry

  • Minimum of 1-3 years related experience, preferably in a Quality Assurance Lab facility

  • Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Working knowledge of MS Excel, Outlook and Word software applications

  • Highly organized and able to multi-task with diverse projects.

  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy boxes (40-50 lbs), going up and down stairs and ladders, bending, standing and walking.
