Burrowing Owl Vineyards (1993) and Estate Winery (1997) were developed by the Wyse family with a vision to produce ultra-premium BC-VQA wines that represent the best characteristics of the region. The three Burrowing Owl vineyards totaling 190 acres gross, are located in the South Okanagan and Similkameen valleys of B.C. on land considered some of the best for viticulture in Canada. The production facility is located 10km south of the town of Oliver and located among some of the Estate's oldest and most prized vineyard blocks. The Okanagan vineyards are planted in Bordeaux and Burgundy varieties as well as Pinot Gris, Syrah and a small amount of Viognier. The Similkameen vineyards are exclusively Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.
The overriding philosophy of the vineyard & winery is and has always been to use proven traditional methods to best express the terroir, in harmony with our state-of-the art facilities and equipment, careful scientific evaluation and a dedicated viticulture and winemaking team. Sustainable practices and environmental initiatives are valued highly at Burrowing Owl and the owners participate actively to advance these causes.
Position Overview
The Vineyard Manager/Viticulturist works closely with senior management and winemakers to plan for the quality and production outcomes of the vineyard, organise daily farm tasks, oversees mechanical systems, plan, manage and communicates regularly with regulators and suppliers. The successful candidate will be provided with, and should aspire to, ever-increasing challenges and levels of responsibility.
Management Skills
Level headed, quick study, competent at creating reliable systems to track process, able to take direction and constructive feedback and offer same, and lead by positive example. English does not have to be your first language, but you will be a thoughtful communicator, able to listen and to converse clearly and competently. You will enjoy the physical aspects of being outside working long days when growing conditions require. You will have the background to participate in consultative dialogue and to provide valuable feedback.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities will include, overseeing daily operations , organize, plan and schedule process, including manual operations, sprays, fertilizer, mechanical & manual application, implement health and safety obligations, managing budgets, equipment maintenance and overseeing all forms of regulatory compliance while ensuring overall efficient use of resources.
Training/Education
The successful candidate will have obtained a university degree in agriculture management, with priority given to those with viticulture specific training, 5+ years managing people, a proven track record of vineyard/farm management, a history developing and managing complex systems, knowledgeable user of Microsoft Office and other industry standard computer systems, plus have a mechanical aptitude and be a competent trouble shooter.
