Lightfoot & Wolfville Vineyards is looking for someone to join our team as a Vineyard Supervisor in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia. Located on the edge of the UNESCO site of Grand Pré and bordering the town of Wolfville, we are a 35+ acre, family-run, estate winery focused on producing premium wines in one of Canada’s most unique wine regions. Our main focuses at Lightfoot & Wolfville are varietal Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and traditional method sparkling wines. We are continuously pushing the boundaries to craft quality cool-climate wines with a sense of place. Overall, we grow approximately 20 commercial varieties including Ortega, Siegerrebe, Scheurebe, Kékfrankos, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chasselas and multiple hybrid varieties such as Geisenheim-318 and Vidal Blanc. We are proud of our history as an eighth-generation farming family and embrace a strong farm-to-bottle mentality. Our vineyards are certified organic and farmed biodynamically because we feel it’s the best choice for our land, our team members, and our wines. To us, wines are grown – making the role of Vineyard Supervisor an integral part of our team. Ultimately, the individual who fills this position has the exciting opportunity to play an important part in furthering the exploration of Nova Scotia’s distinctive terroir.

The Role

The primary responsibility of the Vineyard Supervisor is to assist in day to day management of vineyard operation to ensure production of the highest quality fruit. This individual will work closely with others on the viticulture and winemaking management team to ensure fruit quality and production goals are being met, will help supervise the vineyard labour crew and operate a range of vineyard equipment. 

 The Vineyard Supervisor will maintain competence in key vineyard operation and management functions including:

• Managing vineyard labour crew
• Implementing safety program 
• Operation and maintenance of tractors and other farm equipment
• Mowing and cultivation
• Adherence to existing organic spray schedule
• Trellis installation and maintenance
• Frost protection
• Compost tea preparation and application
• Planting, pruning, and training of grapevines
• Training of crew
• Accurate record keeping

Requirements

• Previous hands-on vineyard experience
• Prior experience in a management role, prior farming experience and formal viticulture education are all assets
• Competency in safe operation of vineyard equipment (tractors, mowers, skid-steer, etc.)  
• Experience/interest in organic/biodynamic farming
• Ability to get along well with others/wide range of personalities
• Possess successful problem-solving abilities
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and periodic overtime (especially during harvest season; Sept-Dec)
• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks outdoors in changing weather conditions
• Flexible thinking – ability to manage changing priorities while maintaining a positive attitude

 

Competitive hourly pay commensurate with experience.
