Woodward Cider Co is a rapidly growing craft cider company owned by the three Woodward brothers.

Role Purpose:

This group of Companies are in a growth phase. We are seeking an energetic and qualified individual to join our team as a Lead Cellarhand and Farm Supervisor. The successful candidate will conduct or supervise all activities related to the farm operations including the vineyard, orchard, Christmas trees and all other green spaces. In addition, this candidate will be the right-hand assistant in the cellar supporting the wine and cider maker in all activities from grape and apple harvest to bottling and storage of the product. The candidate must be versatile, flexible, have an enthusiastic demeanor with clients for support in sales and have a willingness to “pitch-in” in a constantly changing environment.

Responsibility Area

Description

Vineyard & Orchard

  • assist in planning and executing vineyard and orchard operations from pruning to harvest under the direction of the operations manager
  • strong skills in the operation of tractors and other farm equipment and their maintenance as well as a mechanical aptitude.  Perform tractor operations such as spraying, mowing and post auguring
  • vineyard and orchard infrastructure maintenance – post/trellis/fencing/irrigation
  • maintain, upgrade, and operate irrigation systems and other vineyard infrastructure
  • coordinate harvest logistics
  • maintain grounds at winery, event sites and on-site residences

Winery & Cidery  

 

§ assist in all aspects of winery and cidery operations from fruit harvest to packaging under the direction of the winemaker and cider-maker, maintaining quality throughout the process

§ this will include fermentation, racking, filtration, carbonation, bottling, and pasteurization

§ clean and fill kegs

§ assist in loading and unloading trucks with forklift and movement of pallets throughout facility

§ operating pumps, de-stemmers, press and all other equipment related to the production of wine and cider

§ taking temperatures and samples for laboratory analysis

§ making material additions to juice, wine or cider as directed 

§ following high standards of cleaning and sanitizing of processing equipment as directed

§ maintain regular housekeeping and an organized workspace at all times for the entire winery and cidery

§ Report damage and faults as required

§ giving tours as needed

§ Available to work long days and weeks during harvest

§ Participate in offsite activities to help promote our wine and cider

§ “Wine and Cider is fun” so a good character and love of the craft is of utmost importance

§ perform all other duties as assigned

Coaching and Training

·    Lead and supervise a team of seasonal workers in the vineyard, orchard and Christmas tree farm

·    Identify and implement individual training needs

·    Assist with onboarding as required

·    Offer real time guidance and support

Administration

·    Complete Cellar Operations Worksheets in a timely and accurate manner

·    Complete accurate time and attendance records

·    Ensure equipment logs are completed in an accurate and timely manner

·    Assist with inventory as required

·    Adequately fill out timesheets and review employee timesheets

Health & Safety

§ promoting a Health & Safety culture by learning & following safe work procedures

§ working in compliance with our Health, Safety and Environmental Program 

§ Conduct pre-shift safety meetings

§ Conduct monthly safety meetings

 

Qualifications & Experience

Mandatory:

·    Certificate, Diploma, Degree in Oenology/ Winemaking

·    Cellar Experience

·    Vineyard/Orchard Experience

·    Clean Driver’s License

·    Tractor, Forklift & Skid Steer Operation Experience

·    Valid SIN or work permit number

·    Work with limited to no supervision

Preferred:

·    BSc in Oenology and Viticulture

·    Excavator Operation Experience

·    Mechanical aptitude

·    Experience driving pickup truck with trailer
