Viticulturist for Precision Viticulture Startup (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

Full Time

  Vintality (http://www.vintality.ca)

  Okanagan, British Columbia

INTRODUCTION

Vintality is a startup company that provides precision agricultural services, primarily to vineyards. This involves consulting services, surveys and data gathering, and developing new technologies. Vintality is a supportive hub to help vineyards realize their aspirations using quantitative data gathering and analysis, precision viticulture tools, and community connection with a love for terroir in its truest form.

We are looking for a person who is entrepreneurial, self-motivated, passionate about learning and research, and enjoys varied and new tasks.

This role is for someone who is not scared by a computer or hard data and is willing to wear multiple hats. The work will involve conducting different precision agricultural surveys and helping to develop new fertilization and irrigation technologies in the prototype and trial phase.

As a small business, there are many different tasks to be handled and you need to be comfortable interacting with clients and seeking new business. There is also considerable room for pushing the company in directions that match your skillset and passion.

If you enjoy focusing on a single task, working in a structured environment, or prefer in-person supervision, this job is NOT for you.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Working with a small team to help develop a precision irrigation project and a precision fertilization project, currently in prototype and research trial stages
  • Carrying out surveys (electrical conductivity mapping, assisting with drone flights, vineyard design etc.), soil sampling, and consulting with clients
  • Assisting with data processing and analysis
  •  Assisting with the preparation of reports and communication of results to clients
  • Helping to identify and secure new business
  • Other general responsibilities as required

REQUIREMENTS

  • A preference for a viticultural degree, but practical experience is acceptable
  • Must be able to legally work and drive in Canada
  • Must have own transportation
  • Must live in the Okanagan
  • Willing to work flexible hours (based on clients and projects), with longer hours and potential weekends during the growing and harvest season and more time off during the winter (we require less overtime than working in a vineyard and timing is typically more flexible)
  • Strong computer skills (training will be provided on specific programs)
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all conditions, hike, move and setup 30 kg of equipment, dig soil samples, etc.

PLUSES (BUT NOT REQUIREMENTS)

  • Experience with GIS and statistical packages like QGIS and R
  •   Training or experience with sustainability, regenerative, insect pest management, canopy management or other farming systems
  • Sales experience

ENVIRONMENT

The work environment has many varied tasks alternating between outdoors and computer work. It can involve hiking around a vineyard, building a wooden EM38 sled, posting on social media, attending wine functions, banging your head against a wall as to why the data won’t process, pulling equipment on an ATV, meeting with clients, identifying compatible dosing pumps, sourcing parts, and much more.

This is a small company, and while you will receive all necessary training, there is minimal supervision and much independent work. This position requires a high degree of discretionary judgment and initiative.

There is also a heavy research and education component to the work. This involves both educating our clients and also ourselves. There is a strong focus on seeking out new research, data and experiences to bring added value to our clients. This means we spend time finding and reading new research, books, and speaking with farmers willing to share.

You will be working out of your home, sometimes out of our home office, and onsite (primarily) in the Okanagan and occasionally in the interior or Vancouver Island. We also have plans to expand into the USA.

A major component of your work will be working on a precision irrigation project. This will mean working with our engineer and viticultural contractors, sourcing components, and building out our in-field prototype for 2022.

COMPENSATION

· Viticulturalist

· Continuing Education allocation

· Compensation based on experience and skills

· Annual Health Spending Account
