Responsible for providing in house viticultural services, this is a technical position focused on improving the quality of wine grapes produced in Arterra vineyards while maximizing the efficiency of vineyard operations. The role works closely with the Vineyard Manager, Senior Viticulturist and Director of Viticulture, providing direction for all viticultural activities including nutrient amendments, spray programs, pesticide and fertilizer programming and procurement, pest and disease management, canopy management, pruning and experimental practices, research and development.
Key Responsibilities
- implement and revise as required monitoring protocols within Arterra vineyards for insects, disease, weeds, crop loads, and canopy management; train and supervise vineyard technicians on monitoring protocols and GIS software; evaluate sprayer effectiveness and efficiency, develop sprayer output rates
- interpret monitoring results and economic thresholds, determine seasonal spray programs and fertilizer program; maintenance and implementation of vineyard GIS database; coordinate and supervise collection of data from vineyards; prepare weather reports and maintain RS software
- coordinate and execute grape maturity sampling program during harvest; provide crop estimates throughout growing season; record keeping for all harvested grape weights into database
- Consolidate annual pesticide and fertilizer purchasing, managing stock at various vineyard sites and securing supply.
- responsible to remain current on pesticide products and PMRA policies and review periods for compliance with sustainability and practices which are economically viable and generate applicable SOPs for application and handling of hazardous products
- attend relevant industry conferences, communication with local researchers and other industry experts, participate in collaboration with relevant industry partners; continue to search for new technologies to improve grape quality and vineyard efficiency, conduct in house research on current viticulture issues.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelors (4 year) degree in Agriculture or related science. Preference to candidates with Viticulture or equivalent horticulture or related plant science
Experience
- 3-5 years experience in viticulture
- Knowledge/experience with Integrated Pest Management and sustainable grape growing
- Knowledge in high end cool climate wine grape growing
Qualifications, Certifications or Designations
- Valid drivers license
- Microsoft Office Suite (intermediate to advanced)
- Computer skills with GIS software
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
- Pesticide applicators license an asset
Working Conditions
- Ability to work well independently; must be willing to work a flexible schedule especially during harvest; must be willing to work adverse weather conditions
