The APL winemaking team is looking for a passionate and team-oriented Assistant Winemaker to join the Black Hills Winery team!
This role will be responsible for collaborating with the Winemaker to make premium wines for the Okanagan Valley. This person will have deep understanding of vineyard and winemaking operations and is proficient in laboratory tasks and record keeping.
The successful candidate will be accountable for:
- Assist Winemaker with winemaking activities; manage fermentations, inoculations and nutrition strategy.
- Carry out all laboratory functions including, but not limited to, operating Chemwell-T spectrophotometer, as well as wet chemistry.
- Perform all necessary bench trials for blending and fining to ensure highest quality possible and proper stability.
- Responsible to ensure all VQA analysis is performed and submitted to the BCWA in a timely fashion.
- Manage Innovint, the winemaking software, and educate the winemaking team on its operations and ensure all winemaking tasks are recorded.
- Build all necessary spreadsheets to support winemaking, vineyard and logistic functions.
- Responsible for assisting in any audits required for bulk wine, finished goods and year-end inventory.
- Manage and maintain an updated inventory of all bulk wine, and providing a month end total to the Black Hills Controller.
- Responsible for the management and identification of wine in barrel, including creating labels and maps of the barrel room.
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications/skills:
- Diploma or Degree in Science - Oenology and Viticulture, or Food Science from an accredited program
- Three to five years of year-round experience in Winemaking, Cellar Operations and Laboratory Work
- Knowledge in Vineyard Operations desirable
- High proficiency with Microsoft Office applications is required
