We are seeking extraordinary, enthusiastic Cellar Master to join our Winemaking Team. Black Hills Estate Winery is situated on the scenic Black Sage Bench in Oliver, British Columbia and has been producing ultra-premium wine in this region since 1999. Known for our range of Bordeaux and Rhone inspired blends and varieties, our focus is precise and organic vineyard management, minimal intervention in the winery, and delivering a world class wine experience to the thousands of visitors we see annually.
Reporting to the Winemaker, the Cellar Master will be responsible for the day-to-day management of all cellar operations; to help ensure maximum productivity, efficiency, and maintain the high quality of all wines produced.
We are looking for a teammate with:
- Minimum three harvests/two years' production cellar experience combined with supervisory experience
- Knowledge of wines and wine production.
- Mechanical skills and aptitude an asset
- Minimum three years forklift experience, previous certification
- Experience constructively supervising and motivating team members
- Commitment to excellence and high standards. Proactive problem solver
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Confident working around cellar equipment and performing cellar duties and tasks
- Strong organizational and analytical skills. Ability to prioritize thoughtfully and manage workflow.
- Good judgment/ability to make timely and sound decisions.
- Ability to understand and enforce safety requirements and cautions
- WSET Level 2 an asset
- Understanding of wine chemistry an asset
- Ability to perform the necessary physical labor to get the job done
This teammate will be accountable for:
- Supervising all cellar functions including, but not limited, to grape receiving/grape processing operations at harvest, blending, racking, sanitation, pre-bottling preparations such as fining and filtration and forklift operations.
- Operating and maintaining all plant and winemaking equipment within annual budget, including scheduling maintenance, arranging repairs with contractors as needed and keeping records of all maintenance activities.
- Works closely with winemakers to ensure proper implementation of winemaking guidelines and quality control procedures. This may include: writing and maintaining cellar records/keeping, and maintaining/some ordering of cellar supplies.
- Ability to operate forklift and all winery processing equipment.
- Directs the work of the cellar crew in all activities of winemaking. Schedules and tracks workflow
- Monitors performance of cellar crew ensuring cellar personnel follows winemaking guidelines/provides instruction, training, assistance and feedback to cellar workers.
- Ensure staff follows safety guidelines, procedures and wearing of personal safety equipment.
