Job Description
We are currently recruiting for a detail orientated, team player who is self-motivated and goal focused to fill the position of Cellar Hand at Laughing Stock Vineyards.
Laughing Stock Vineyards is a boutique winery on the Naramata Bench near Penticton. We work hard at trying not to live up to our name, and thus aim to make serious wines with a light-hearted attitude. In the past 15 years, our winery has become one of the most respected and sought-after wine producers in BC.
The Role:
As a Cellar Hand you will work closely with our Winemaking team in the creation of our award-winning wines. Your key responsibilities and duties are as follows:
- Grape Processing: Grape and Juice Reception, Destemming, Crushing, and Pressing
- Fermentation Management: Inoculations, Nutrient Additions, Sampling, Pump Overs, Punch Downs, Sugar Monitoring, and Digging Out of Fermenters
- Cellar Work: Barrel Work, Racking and Product Transfers
- Cellar Sanitation: Tank & Barrel Cleaning, and general cleaning of facility and winery equipment
- Warehousing & Wine Packaging: Assistance in the packing, courier preparation and distribution of wine as required.
- Follow all safety procedures as directed by standard operating procedures
- Work Order Completion and Compliance
- Safe Operation of Cellar Forklift and Other Winery Equipment (Training Provided)
- Inventory Control
In addition to working in the cellars this position will also be required to support our Vineyards as required. Responsibilities may include:
- Safe operation of quad when required to use.Including winter plowing of winery property, seasonal weed sprays and irrigation repairs.
- Regular participation in pruning, suckering, leaf removal and fruit thinning as directed by the winemaker or vineyard leadership
- Knowledge of vineyard irrigation and irrigation repairs.Throughout the season, cellar-hand will be tasked to complete or assist in keeping vineyard health optimized.
- Property maintenance duties:
- There will be a seasonal requirement to complete tasks in and around winery/tasting room and vacation rental property.These could include garbage removal, lawn maintenance, snow removal and other such activities that affect the safety and esthetic of a professional operation.
Job Requirements
- Post-Secondary Education (Science or Winemaking Degree Preferred)
- Strong commitment to quality with attention to detail.
- Candidate must be hands on, dependable, and self-starting.
- Good problem solving abilities along with basic logistic skills required.
- Knowledge of safe cellar practices, including safe handling of chemicals.
- Ability to be trained in confined space entry process and procedures.
- Knowledge of winery cellar operating procedures.
- Teamwork and customer service skills.
- Ability to work shift work including weekends
- Ability to understand and perform mathematic calculations.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Maintain an organized work place.
- Ability to lift 55 lbs.
- Able and willing to work required hours and shifts necessitated during vintage.
