Our client is a leading Prince Edward County winery with 9 labels earning 90 points or higher. Like Burgundy, Prince Edward County is prized for its limestone bedrock, which lends a succulent and mineral taste to Pinot Noirs and chardonnays, and its climate, where the warm summer temperatures slowly taper off into autumn, producing wines with strong acidity without being sickly sweet. The winery is now searching for an extraordinary WINEMAKER who will be responsible for the successful execution of all winemaking and vineyard activities. We are looking for an existing winemaker looking to make a change or an Assistant Winemaker who wants to move up to the next level.
The successful candidate will be accountable for day to day Winemaking and Vineyard operations including but not limited to:
- Leading and managing a team of Quality, Cellars and Packaging team members.
- Processing of grapes, blending, fermentation, stabilization and filtration.
- Harvest planning logistics, scheduling, hiring, training, etc.
- Grape quality assessment.
- Fermentation management and laboratory analysis review.
- Barrel and inventory management.
- Setting and revising product specifications.
- Procurement and equipment commissioning as required.
- Working with viticulture, sales and marketing to continue to improve wine quality, brand innovation and sales performance.
- Collaborating with General Manager and team regarding product development and improvement initiatives.
- Managing and monitoring operating and capital budgets.
- Ensuring property wines are submitted to the VQA panel as per corporate guidelines
- Participating in tastings, sensory panels and public relations initiatives.
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications/skills:
- A degree or diploma in Wine, Oenology and Viticulture or substantial experience in winemaking.
- Experience in Vineyard Operations.
- Proven, progressive success in Winemaking.
- Inspirational leadership and team management experience.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills; exceptional communication skills.
- Passionate, driven, and has a winning attitude.
- Current industry involvement/memberships are desirable.
