The Roost Winery, Bistro & Farm Bakery, located in North Saanich on Vancouver Island just north of Victoria, is a growing, family-run business. Founded as a bakery back in 2000, in late 2016 the Roost expanded its operations to include a winery and bistro. We currently grow Siegerrabbe grapes primarily but have expanded with Pinot Noir, Marechal Foch, and Leon Millot. Grown on our small estate exclusively for our boutique winery, with expansion plans currently underway for more grape production.
Vineyard Manager/Winemaker
The Roost is seeking an experienced Vineyard Manager/Winemaker to assume a hands-on role further developing and executing an effective viticulture program that will achieve targeted quality and yields from our small vineyards. Reporting to the Roost's owner, this individual will have the opportunity to work closely with other key team members in all facets of the business to further the Roost's growth and brand reputation.
Your duties as Vineyard Manager will include managing work crews, monitoring vine health and delivering grapes to the winery. Your duties as Winemaker will include development of an annual plan and budget, management of a small work crew, and overseeing the quality control of wines in tanks, kegs and bottles. As a combined position of Vineyard Manager & Winemaker, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the wine production process, including strategic direction as well as day-to-day operations. As a part of the management team in our small but growing business, this is a key role in an exciting industry.
Specific Responsibilities Include:

- The hands-on management of our vineyard and landscaping, working alongside staff in season.
- Planning and executing, in a timely manner, all vineyard functions including pruning, spray program, weed control, capturing, leaf thinning, fertilization program, irrigation program, soil and leaf analysis and remediation, netting and harvest.
- Managing and motivating vineyard crew.
- Maintaining vineyard infrastructure & operating, cleaning and maintaining all vineyard equipment.
- Directing the processing of the grapes, production of wine, storage of product and bottling of product.
- Setting production schedules in line with the capabilities of the facility and the needs of the market.
- Managing inventory levels of supplies and materials used in the production of wine.
- Maintaining records as required for the purpose of meeting government and corporate requirements.
- Supervising maintenance and repair of equipment and tanks used in the cellar operation.
- Working collaboratively with farm crew to manage incoming fruit and during harvest.
- Determining the need for and managing outside contractors as needed.
- Monitoring the condition of all wines in an effort to prevent spoilage.
- Assisting in development of the product mix and grape needs for coming season.
- Working with sales to project the desired product mix based on the past year’s sales.
- Collaborating with ownership and other leaders to plan blends and products to be produced to meet the projections of the sales group.
- Leading public and private tours as needed.
Personnel Management and Leadership Responsibilities:

- Actively engaging with company management to work through important business opportunities and changes.
- Continually looking to innovate winemaking and production and adapt to changing market conditions.
- Developing business cases and rollout plans for new initiatives.
- Coaching/mentoring direct reports and providing regular feedback on performance.
- Actively participating in company-wide employee evaluation process.
