Tawse is a family-owned winery dedicated to producing premium terroir-driven wines. We are proud to be Canada’s Winery of the Year in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2016. We produce certified Organic and Biodynamic wines from over 200 acres of premium Niagara vineyards. Our portfolio includes a large traditional method sparkling wine program, world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as Riesling and Cabernet Franc. As part of our production team, you will also work with wines from our sister winery Redstone (Winery of the Year 2017). Our production also includes cider and many other exciting new projects. We produce approximately 40,000 cases each year.
We are currently looking for a highly motivated and hardworking Laboratory Technician. This role also includes some cellar work when required and a variety of other tasks. The right candidate will have a positive & flexible attitude. This is an hourly wage position and includes but is not limited to the following:
Duties & Responsibilities:
-Collect samples from various production sites
-Ability to perform all laboratory tests (chemical & microbiological) required by winemakers. These include, but are not limited to:
-Analysis of Malic acid, VA and Residual Sugar via spectrophotometer
-Yeast counts using hemocytometer
-All distillation and wet chemistries such as Alcohol, pH, TA, YAN, Sulfur Dioxide (aspiration), heat and cold stabilities, NTUs.
-Filtration & centrifugation of samples
-Various trials (fining, filtration, blending, fermentation, etc)
-Communication of analysis with supervisor(s)
-Maintain accuracy and reliability in lab analysis
-Accurate preparation of solutions & reagents
-Maintenance and calibration of all laboratory equipment
-Keep inventory and order all consumables in a cost & time effective manner
-Ability to meet and exceed deadlines
-Maintain a clean and organized work environment
-Filing & Data entry
-Use of winemaking software
-Inoculations
-Brix & temperature checks using various methods
-Additions to juice, ferments and wine
Requirements:
-Exceptional attention to detail
-Persistent organizational & time management skills
-Able to work in a dynamic fast paced team environment
-Ability to identify and solve problems
-Able to Communicate well with supervisors and others
-Strong adherence to safety and operational procedures
-Must meet physical demands including
-standing for long periods of time;
-navigating stairs;
-working in various weather conditions;
-lifting up to 20kg;
-working at heights;
-working in small spaces
-Full drivers license and clean driving record
-Willing and able to work extended hours, any day of the week
-Must be a Canadian Citizen - or - have residency status - or - Must have a valid Working Visa for Canada
Assets:
-Previous vintage experience in cellar and lab
-University or College Degree in Oenology and Viticulture
-Experience using microscope
-Experience in fermentation management
-Forklift experience
-Proficient in Microsoft Word & Excel
