Situated on Canada’s Atlantic coast, Lightfoot & Wolfville Vineyards is a farm, winery and event venue, owned and operated by the Lightfoot family who have been farming in the Annapolis Valley for eight generations. Championing organic and biodynamic viticulture, Lightfoot & Wolfville, certified organic by Ecocert Canada and biodynamic by Demeter, nurtures not only 40 acres of estate vineyard but also raises heritage breed livestock and grows its own produce for the winery kitchen. The focus is on terroir-driven wines that speak of their origin including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, aromatic whites such as Riesling, cold-hardy hybrid varieties and sparkling wines. With close proximity to the Minas Basin and the world’s highest tides, cool breezes and excellent temperature moderation help create wines with great distinction.
We are searching for a full-time Cellar Hand to join our winemaking team.
Desired Attributes:
· University or college degree in Oenology & Viticulture
· Experience (2+ years) in wine production of premium wines
· Experience or a keen interest to learn about organic and biodynamic winegrowing is a must
· Strength in the following skill areas: reliability, organization, motivation, communication, positivity, attention to detail, ability to work within a team
· An enthusiasm for fine wine, artisanal practices and a dedication to quality
· The successful candidate must also be able and willing to work long physical hours
during harvest as required, including weekends, have a valid driver’s license, be
able to lift 50lbs and drive a forklift/skid-steer.
· Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office programs – i.e. Excel & Word
Responsibilities:
This hands-on position involves every aspect of production from crush pad to bottle, working closely with the Winemaker and Vineyard Manager. This position would entail (but not be limited to):
· Operation of crush pad during harvest
· Managing and executing all cellar tasks under direction from the Head Winemaker including transfers, racking, barrel work, filtering, cleaning, etc.
· Record keeping.
· Laboratory analysis.
· Bottling line supervision and operation.
· Tasting wines and making winemaking decisions in conjunction with the rest of the
winemaking team.
· Represent the winery at tastings, events and on tours as needed.
· Assist with the management of farm animals may be necessary on occasion (cattle, sheep, pigs)
