This position requires an energetic and positive individual who works well independently and can take feedback on a regular basis. This is a hands-on position as we have a relatively small production team.
We are a busy, fast-paced established winery and are looking for candidates who can appreciate our roots while also helping us grow for the future.
To be eligable for this position, you must be able to attend an in-person interview the week of February 28, 2022.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Winemaker is responsible for the management, direction and coordination for winemaking in the facility. Responsible for wine product quality - completed by overseeing and directing all wine processing.
This position reports directly to the owners of the business.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
· Manages and directs production processes to maximize production capacity and efficiency without compromising adherence to the highest standards of safety, quality, regulatory compliance, and the Company’s vision.
· Interacts with sales staff and customers regarding wine readiness and shipping, on-site tasting, sample preparation
· Participates in the development of all winery facilities.
· Manages inventory – both Bulk and Bottled wine
· Assists with month-end paperwork and reporting (LCBO, VQA) as well as annual LCBO/VQA Audits
· Assures effective communication among production staff along with the Director of Winemaking and with all other departments and managers.
· Familiarity with VQA standards and procedures is essential
PRODUCTION
· Must have knowledge and experience with multiple grape varietals – including vitis vinifera, French hybrids and a working knowledge of fruit wine production.
· Have working knowledge of all pieces of cellar equipment including, de-stemmer/crushers, presses, cross-flow filters, lees filters, pumps, bottling line, other harvest equipment, barrels, etc.
· Have working knowledge of all cellar procedures such as crushing, fermenting, pressing, wine movements, topping, barrel work, filtration, sterilization of equipment, bottling, etc.
· Works daily in cellar, especially during harvest. Remaining time spent in administrative tasks within the Winery.
· Works collaboratively with the Owners in all aspects of the job
· Can manage production/inventory of approximately 100,000 L per year
KEY REQUIREMENTS:
· Education: Bachelor’s degree in fermentation science or related field or Bachelor’s degree in Enology, Viticulture or related. Certificate in Enology, Viticulture, or relevant experience considered with other four-year degrees
· Years of Experience: 5+ years’ experience in a winemaking position
· Full knowledge of winemaking theory
· Strong technical skills, including a hands-on approach to management and understanding of production equipment.
· Excellent mechanical aptitude with the skills to understand the workings of all winery equipment and the ability to assess need for equipment repairs.
· Self-motivated
· Independent worker
· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
· Ability to receive feedback
· Excellent oral and written communication skills
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
· Required to move, lift, carry, pull and place objects weighing less than or equal to 40 pounds without assistance
· Work outside in hot or cold weather
· The ability to work longer shifts during harvest season

Salary of $60,000 to $80,000 per year depending on experience. Benefits package after probation period, monthly wine allotment and discount at the restuarant.
