Backyard Vineyards, a division of Diamond Estates Wines & Spirits is a 15,000-case winery producing sparkling, white, red, and fortified wine located in Langley, British Columbia, Canada.

The winemaking team is looking to add an individual who has a passion and curiosity to produce quality wines for the role of Harvest Intern for the upcoming 2023 harvest period.

This role will be responsible for helping with all winemaking tasks as requested on work orders generated by the winemaking team and contribute to productivity by carrying out all requested cellar functions in a timely, accurate and safe manner. This job can be physically demanding and requires a person to be able to work under specific working conditions.

This position is seasonal with full time hours between September 1, 2023, through to December 1, 2023, with the potential to be extended. 

Summary of Responsibilities

• Receive, follow, and complete all work orders in a timely manner.
• Ensure the highest level of cleanliness each time wine is handled.
• Set up pumps and hoses to perform transfers, racking and filling of transport tankers.
• Operate grape receiving equipment such receiving hopper, crusher de-stemmer and various pumps.
• Operate Grape presses including filling, programming, emptying, and cleaning. 
•  Operate various types of filtration equipment such as Rotary Drum Vacuum filter and Pad Filter.
• Handle sanitation chemicals safely while wearing all Personal Protective Wear.
• Clean and sanitize all tanks, hoses and equipment when necessary.
• Operate a forklift and/or articulating boom lift when required (if certified).
• Perform various wine related duties required for bottling including final additions, setting up and changing filter pads.

Requirements   

• Knowledge of winery cellar operating procedures.
•  Diploma or degree in appropriate science related discipline.
• Effective communication skills, including a good understanding of the English language.
• Dependable, punctual, and have a positive attitude.
• Organizational skills with attention to detail.
• Able to maintain control and composure in sometimes hectic situations.
• Forklift certified (training available if necessary).
• WHMIS certified (training available).
• Able to work long hours and irregular shifts (including weekends and holidays).
• Must be able to lift and carry at least 50lbs.
• Able to work in a wet and cool environment, and outdoors as needed.
