We are seeking extraordinary, enthusiastic Assistant Winemaker to join our team. Tinhorn Creek Vineyards in Oliver, BC is one of the Okanagan's most innovative and environmentally sustainable estate wineries with an extensive health and safety program. We are a 450-ton winery in the heart of the South Okanagan wine region, with vineyards on both the Golden Mile Bench and the Black Sage Bench. We produce roughly 50:50 white and red, and our two unique vineyard sites allow us to grow both Bordeaux and Burgundy varietals in addition to a dash of Syrah and Gewurztraminer. We employ a basic and natural wine making approach and have a small but skilled team you would enjoy working with.

Under the direction of the Winemaker this position is responsible for assisting in winemaking process from grape harvest through bottling, ensuring compliance to specifications, maintaining quality, maximizing quality and efficiencies. It requires a good understanding of vineyard and winemaking operations, along with proficiency in laboratory tasks and record keeping. In addition, this role involves accountable production plans and revisions to ensure that corporate goals are achieved.

We are looking for a teammate with:

  • Diploma or degree in Science, B.Sc - Oenology and Viticulture or Food Science or Equivalent
  • Experience operating a lab
  • Experience in cellar operations, food manufacturing preferred
  • Knowledge of WHMIS, HACCP, and GMP's and asset
  • General wine and fermentation knowledge
  • Strong attention to detail; Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Supervisory experience and a commitment to excellence and high standards.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage workflow, use good judgment to make timely and sound decisions.

This teammate will be accountable for:

  • Provide leadership to cellar personnel to promote and protect wine quality
  • Issue and assign work orders for all daily activities, assist in harvest supervision
  • Communicate with Winemaker on the status of the respective ferments, movements, and cellar activities/processes
  • Actively participate in tastings of juices, ferments and finished wines
  • Management of data in WIS and Excel (including troubleshooting) including production of work orders (and accurate calculations of additions), Input of completed work orders (and follow-up on tank measurements), troubleshooting of data base errors; Crop and Wine production forecasts
  • Resolve technical lab issues and procedures
  • Management of information pertaining to BCVQA, ensuring wines are submitted in a timely fashion.
  • Interpretation of lab results and decisions regarding additions such as predictive chemistry on how adjustments will affect wines in tank at different stages
  • Prepare pre-bottling scheduling
  • Participates on Industry committees as required
  • Ability to differentiate between acceptable and unacceptable product; take appropriate action to quarantine, communicate, and rectify any nonconforming products
  • Responsible for maintaining clean and sanitary position of the cellars according to CFIA guidelines
  • Follows safe work process' and report all upset working conditions/hazards to the winemaker
  • Assist in hiring and development of all seasonal staff
  • Verification of Bills of Lading, shipping and receiving
  • May oversees effluent monitoring and reporting
