CELLAR TECHNICIAN 

We are currently recruiting for the position of Cellar Technician. This is an entry-level, full-time position that would commence immediately. This position works closely with and reports directly to the Assistant Winemaker & Cellar Master at Big Head Wines.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic cellar environment that brings together the old with the new. You will work with alternative vessels such as terracotta, concrete, and large oak formats, while also working with techniques like appassimento, wild fermentation, and carbonic maceration. You will also learn crossflow filtration, reverse osmosis, and sparkling wine production such as riddling and disgorging.

The Cellar Tech is involved in countless tasks throughout the course of the winemaking year, with ebbs and flows attributed to seasonal change, and the overall growth trajectory of the organization. The Cellar Tech must have an open availability, and an understanding that during harvest – hours can be long and at times irregular.

Skills and Responsibilities:

The job duties described below are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by individuals assigned to the role of Cellar Tech. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of this position. All employees may be required to perform duties outside of their normal responsibilities from time to time, as needed.

  • Cleaning tanks, barrels, equipment
  • Maintaining a safe, clean, and well-organized environment
  • Providing technical support to the winemaking team
  • Operating the Cross Flow and Reverse Osmosis machines both on- and off-site
  • Using various pumps, forklift, Sky Jack and other machinery
  • Making additions, racking, transfers, and blending
  • Sparkling production including bottling/tirage, riddling, disgorging and packaging
  • Grape receiving, sorting, pressing, pump-overs and punch-downs
  • Barrel and vessel topping and monitoring
  • Vineyard work as required over the growing season
  • Provide support to warehouse and retail
  • Able to work overtime and evenings as required over harvest
  • Able to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Adhering to and upholding all standards set forth by Andrzej and Big Head Wines

What you bring:

  • Certificate, diploma, or degree in winemaking preferred
  • 1-3 years of experience in wine production
  • Physically fit and able to lift and carry up to 23kg
  • Comfortable working on and around ladders, catwalks, uneven flooring; in hot, cold and wet environments; with typical winery chemical exposure and conditions
  • Forklift certification
  • Positive attitude and a can-do mentality
  • Strong attention to detail and communication skills
  • Self sufficient
  • Valid driver’s license and own transportation

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $18.00-$22.00 per hour

Supplemental pay types:

  • Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
