The Junior Wine and Cider Maker’s focus is to produce high quality and innovative wines, cider and packaged products that celebrate our terroir. This role’s responsibilities are to conduct wine quality checks, bulk wine inventory, ordering supplies, in-house lab testing, and maintaining team relationships. Beyond producing our regular products, help build out our Bottle Craft and Craft Cider product lines. With a focus toward local ingredients, unique fermentations and carbonating.
Duties and responsibilities
- Make delicious wines and ciders! Including fermentation, carbonating, racking, filtering, blending, and bottling through both force carb and bottle conditioning techniques
- Work with Production Manager to ensure scheduling and targets are met
- Research ingredients and work with team to order supplies
- Lead innovative product development through the creation of new recipes
- Plan and conduct trials and experiments
- Conduct lab analysis such as SO2, ABV, acidity titrations, PH and residual sugar testing
- Work closely with wine ambassadors to conduct information sessions and implement feedback
- Collaborate with Production Manager to meet quality targets for wine, cranberries, and maple syrup
- Keep excellent records for traceability
- Monitor, edit and author standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Assist with farm operations when opportunities arise
- Other duties as required
Resources at your Disposal
- 900+ hectoliters of stainless-steel tank capacity
- Wine lab station with laptop and analysis machines
- Regular meetings with a winemaking consultant with decades of experience
- Original recipe developer available on call for consultation
- A sommelier on staff
- Wine library dating back to our origin in 2000
- Manual bottling line with capacity > 1 case per minute
- Logistics Coordinator to manage forklift and organize warehouse space
- Seller Hand and Bottling/Packaging Crew
Qualifications
- Post-secondary qualifications in Wine/Beer making diploma or a Bachelor of Science degree, an asset
- Lab skills considered an asset
- Experience working in beverage production considered an asset
- Sound computer knowledge Microsoft Office, Excel
- Strong commitment to quality with high attention to detail
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Good critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
- Dependable, hands-on and willing to take initiative
- Knowledge of food safety practices an asset
- Forklift license an asset
- Driver’s license, and own transportation required
- Other duties as required
Working conditions
- Working conditions and work hours vary seasonally. Weekend work is required when behind on production schedule. Four-day work week possible when ahead of schedule
- Supervision varies from working alone to collaborating as part of a packaging team
- Work location is in person and takes place mostly indoors
- Appropriate safety attire to participate in production processes throughout the facility
- Ability to safely operate a forklift and other winemaking equipment
- This job is physically demanding, requiring heavy lifting, and bending
