Black Hills Estate Winery (www.blackhillswinery.com) is a prestigious winery operating on the famed Black Sage Road between Oliver and Osoyoos, B.C. in Canada. From the spectacular terroir on our 50 acre estate vineyards, our winery has been passionately hand- crafting exceptional wines for over 18 years. This includes our flagship Nota Bene and Alibi blends.

We are currently seeking an Oenologist to join our team on a one year contract to support a maternity leave . The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out all laboratory functions, and collaborating with the Winemaker to make premium wine.

The successful candidate will be accountable for:

  • All laboratory functions including but not limited to, operating Chemwell-T spectrophotometer, as well as wet chemistry.
  • Assisting Winemaker with winemaking activities including managing fermentations, inoculations and nutrition strategy.
  • Managing Innovint (winemaking software).
  • Completing all VQA analysis and submitting to BCWA in a timely manner.
  • Performing all necessary bench trials; building all necessary spreadsheets to support winemaking, vineyard and logistics functions.
  • Managing and maintaining inventory; managing and identification of wine in barrel.
  • Following safe work procedures and practices and reports all unsafe working conditions/hazards to their reporting Manager.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications/skills:

  • Post-secondary education in Science Oenology and Viticulture, or Food Science.
  • 3 5 years' experience in wine industry focused on lab, winemaking and/or cellar operations.
  • High proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Outlook and Excel).
  • Self-motivated; able to multi-task and prioritize tasks.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders).
  • Ability to exercise judgement and function independently.
  • Able to work evenings, weekends and holidays when required (during Harvest season).
