Charton Hobbs, one of Canada’s oldest and most successful wine and spirit importing companies, is looking to fill the role of Portfolio & Marketing Manager.

Job Summary: 

In this job, you will manage the development of our product assortment and portfolio development for roughly half our total product mix.  This entails

  • selling (and where applicable developing from scratch) listings to BCLS buyers
  • developing spend plans for suppliers (sometimes in conjunction with brand managers, sometimes autonomously)
  • and mining for products that have an application in any or all of the Western provinces.

 The portfolio of suppliers includes these icons of the Canadian market:  Moet Hennessy brands (Veuve Clicquot, Moet Chandon, Dom Perignon, Hennessy, etc.), the Sazerac brands (Fireball, Buffalo Trace, Van Winkle, Southern Comfort, etc.), Luxardo, Diplomatico, Batasiolo (Piedmont), San Felice (Tuscany), Cakebread (California), and several others.

The nitty gritty of Duties and Responsibilities:

1.    BCLS Oversight

  • Identify opportunities to sell new listings to BCLS’s Category Managers
  • Build spend plans that maximize our sale potential – LTOs, marketing, sales incentives, and whatever else you bring to the table.
  • Develop and manage one-time buys and allocated products
  • Maintain an open, continuous dialogue with BCLS Category Managers to;

review possible de-lists;

develop with BCLS and CH Marketing and Commercial team action plans to address sales trends;

Supplier substitute new products to recover lost volume;


2.    Supplier Relations

  • Develop strong relationships with our international suppliers to secure listings and budget.
  •  Work with suppliers to match products from their international brand space with BCLS opportunities and, when necessary, develop new products and prices best suited to market conditions.
  • Lead annual special release offers to W. Canada markets on select luxury suppliers (back vintages, large formats, etc)
  • Create and update relevant supplier periodic and annual forecasts in CH Order Model system by adjusting our sales forecast and inventory model.
  • Lead relevant Supplier Visits to market business meetings and attend all National phone conferences to discuss brand strategy and update National team on listing status.

3.    Western Canada Engagement

  • Work with Regional Provincial Sales Manager to introduce and educate Sales Teams on new and existing products for Roll Out Meetings or as product development takes place.
  • Communicate your portfolio’s capacity and opportunities to VP Alberta and Man/Sask Sales Director.

Skills Required

  • You have a passion for winning and a good eye for what products work in markets.
  • With this, you balance your enthusiasm for what you and your suppliers want to sell with feedback from colleagues and BCLS buyers who know their stuff.
  • You have a deft hand at communicating plainly to all manner of international backgrounds and business models and the diplomacy to maintain and build great working relationships with our business partners.
  • You have strong Wine & Spirits Knowledge – WSET Level 2 minimum.  WSET 3 is preferred.
  • You build clear and sometimes awesome Powerpoint presentations and are secretly good at Excel.
  • While you are pretty clever, you don’t have a monopoly on good ideas and value talking things over with your colleagues to continually improve your business acumen.
