Job Description
Tantalus Vineyards is seeking an Accounting Manager/Controller to oversee and optimize its financial operations. This role is essential to maintaining the integrity of accounting systems, ensuring compliance with industry regulations, and supporting strategic financial planning for the winery’s continued growth. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership, attention to detail, and experience in agriculture, hospitality and/or the wine industry to this dynamic position.
Responsibilities
Financial Reporting: Prepare accurate financial statements and reports including on an annual and ad hoc basis to suit business needs.
Budgeting and Forecasting: Develop and manage annual budgets, monitor financial performance, and provide forecasts to support the winery’s operational and strategic initiatives.
Cost Accounting: Analyze production costs, vineyard operations, and distribution expenses to identify cost-saving opportunities specific to Tantalus Vineyards and enhance profitability.
Accounts Payable and Receivable: Administer AP/AR processes, ensuring timely invoicing, payments, and reconciliation to maintain positive relationships with suppliers and distributors.
Payroll Management: Manage payroll processes, employee benefits, and compliance with statutory requirements including for a tight-knit and diverse team.
Cash Flow Management: Monitor and optimize cash flow to ensure the financial health and sustainability of Tantalus Vineyards.
Tax Compliance: Handle wine industry-specific tax reporting, including GST/PST filings, Excise, and liaise with auditors or tax consultants.
Internal Controls: Establish and maintain robust inventory and other internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accuracy in financial records, reflecting Tantalus Vineyards' commitment to excellence.
Strategic Financial Planning: Collaborate with senior management to provide financial insights that contribute to the winery’s growth and operational efficiency.
Skills and Qualifications
Education: Post-secondary education in Accounting, Bookkeeping, Finance, or a related field. Accounting designation is preferred.
Experience: At least 5 years of accounting experience is preferable; experience in the wine or agriculture industry is highly desirable.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in accounting software (e.g. Sage) and Microsoft Excel.
Knowledge: Familiarity with wine industry regulations, costing methods, and tax requirements, especially those relevant to BC wineries.
Analytical Skills: Strong ability to interpret financial data, identify trends, and provide actionable insights to enhance performance.
Teamwork: Proven ability to work well in a team setting, contributing to a collaborative and results-driven work environment.
Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with stakeholders across all levels of Tantalus Vineyards.
Organizational Skills: Highly organized with the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and handle multiple responsibilities within the winery's dynamic operations.
Problem-Solving: Proactive approach to resolving financial discrepancies and implementing tailored improvements.
Passion: Genuine interest in the wine industry and enthusiasm for contributing to the success of Tantalus Vineyards.
