Located on a historic property in South East Kelowna, Tantalus Vineyards is highly regarded as one of Canada’s top producers of Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Our site is comprised of 75 acres of continuous land, including 3 residences, 10 acres of protected forest area, and over 50 acres under vine. We strive for balance and sustainability rather than forcing outcomes. The vineyard is farmed naturally, and the vines are entirely hand-tended. We are committed to the practice of regenerative farming to produce the best possible grapes in any given season while also enhancing or preserving the biodiversity and health of the ecosystem. Efforts to this end include an on-site composting system, a year-round no-till cover crop program, and the use of compost teas and other microbial sprays. As Vineyard Manager, you will be responsible for the operation of our 50-acre estate vineyard and assist in the development (and eventually operation) of satellite vineyards located on nearby properties. Working closely with the Winemaker/GM, you will be responsible for leading a small but dedicated team of full-time and seasonal workers. Your responsibilities will include:
- Cultivation, thinning, pruning, tying, suckering, canopy management, and planting/replanting
- Tractor maintenance and operation
- Irrigation and erosion control
- Implementation of a comprehensive pest management program
- Maintenance and acquisition of necessary tools and equipment
- Quality control and testing for vine and soil health
- Stewardship of the Sustainable Winegrowing BC principles
- Uphold safe work practices in line with Worksafe BC standards
- Coordinate with winemaker on harvest and vineyard management activities and timelines
- Coordinate with management to achieve budget and performance goals
- Periodic vineyard education sessions for staff, media, and industry professionals as necessary
We’re looking for someone who is passionate about viticulture and understands the requirements of sustainable winemaking. In addition, the ideal candidate will have:
- A degree or diploma in viticulture
- Minimum 5 years experience in viticulture or a related industry
- Experience with maintenance and operation of farming equipment
- Good communication and organizational skills
- Experience with biodynamics would be considered an asset
- Valid drivers’ licence and ability to operate a tractor and trailer
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and work in all weather conditions on uneven terrain
- Ability to work long hours in peak seasons
- Must be legally able to work in Canada
