Benchmark "Winemaker’s Vineyard" Looking for a Partner
It all starts in the vineyard.
I purchased in the winter of 2017 and started making major changes to the land after one growing season of observations.
My winemaking and viticulture experience began in the Mornington Peninsula (Victoria, Australia) and I have had the good fortune to work for leading producers in France, Germany, Ontario and BC.
In my own vineyard I decided to keep two of the original blocks of Pinot Noir and work on improving the vine balance, then redeveloped 70% of the vineyard using all the knowledge that I gained working for world class wineries. This required uprooting the vines and replacing much of the vineyard infrastructure.
I created a Benchmark Vineyard for the Okanagan using permaculture influences in the new design. The result is truly unique with North-South terraced rows, own-rooted vines, high density and very high density planting using exclusive Pinot Noir clones. Chardonnay and small amounts of Gamay Noir were also planted. I plan to plant small amount of Savagnin (not Sauvignon) Blanc (from the Jura) in 2021 for blending purposes.
The vineyard has been grown organically since 2017 with plans to use biodynamic principles and other alternative growing methods in the future. Medicinal plants and other crops like cherries, Asian pears, mulberries and more have also been planted for biodiversity. One highly respected winemaking and viticulture consultant in BC commented, “This is one of the nicest vineyards in BC".
In 2019 I made small batches of Pinot Noir from the mature vines and production will be increasing in the coming years. The winemaking style is extraordinary using old fashion and simple (but thoughtful) winemaking techniques utilizing high end, small, Italian concrete tanks and ceramic eggs to create wines that are stimulating to the palate and the intellect. A leading BC Pinot Noir producer declared the 2019 wine, “very impressive”.
The wine business needs more than talent, hard work and a great vineyard. It also needs energy and capital. Hence, I am looking for a partner who shares similar values and long term goals.
If I the right partner isn’t out there, I would consider selling the vineyard to someone that can appreciate the attention to detail and the true quality of the site. This is not a grower’s vineyard.
