Welcome to Backyard Vineyards where, since 2009, we have been producing award-winning table and sparkling wines from 100% BC grapes grown on-site in our own home vineyard in Langley and fruit selected from the Fraser Valley and South Okanagan.
We are seeking a multi-faceted cellar hand to assist and support the winemaker in the production department. You will be integral to the day-to-day operation of the winery and will perform a wide range of tasks – from processing fruit, through fermentation, to finishing and bottling the wine, as well as vineyard work.
As part of the cellar team, you will work closely with our Wine Maker and Wine Making Assistant on a variety of tasks in and around the winery, including bottling, cleaning and sanitizing, inventory management, delivery of wine to tasting room, and various tasks in the vineyard.
The majority of your work will include all sorts of manual labour – filling barrels, driving fork-lifts, pumping over, racking, transferring juice or wine from one tank to another, and cleaning tanks, barrels, cellar floors and picking bins.
The ideal candidate will have a good level of fitness and, most importantly, a demonstrable interest in what you’re going to be doing. You need to be willing and hardworking and not afraid to get dirty or wet – both guaranteed several times daily.
Key Responsibilities:
- Harvest Processing (Grape Reception, Destemming, Crushing, Pressing)
- Fermentation Management: inoculations, nutrient additions, sampling, pump overs, punch downs, and digging tanks out
- Cellar Work: barrel filling, racking, blending, additions
- Cellar Sanitation: tank and barrel cleaning, general cleaning of facility and winery equipment
- Operating forklift and other winery equipment
- Inventory management
Job Requirements:
- Strong commitment to quality with attention to detail.
- Candidate must be hands-on, dependable, and self-starting.
- Good problem solving skills
- Knowledge of safe cellar practices, including safe handling of chemicals.
- Knowledge of winery cellar operating procedures.
- Teamwork and customer service skills.
- Ability to work shift work including late nights and weekends
- Ability to lift 55 lbs.
