Position: Viticulturist

Reports to: Director of Operations

Position Summary:

Adamo Estate Winery is a dynamic and award-winning winery. Our 18 acre Estate Vineyard, established in 2012, is located on a more northern part of Niagara Escarpment in the hills of Hockley Valley, Ontario, Canada. We are an ultra-premium winery that focuses on making wines with a sense of place from our Estate grown fruit as well as select premium vineyards in the Niagara Peninsula of Ontario, Canada.  Our small batch winemaking program allows us to work with many varietals of both red and white Vitis vinifera grapes.  Adamo Estate Winery believes in a hands-on approach and minimalist intervention to allow natural expression of the grape from each specific vineyard site.  Our Estate Vineyard is managed with organic practices and encourages biodiversity and balance.

Job Description: Viticulturist

The Viticulturist will oversees the entire production process of creating wine, including grape harvesting, crushing, fermentation, aging, blending and bottling. They combine scientific concepts with practical experience to alter a wine's chemical composition and make key decisions based on the levels of acid, sugar, sulfur and sulfite within a wine. The Viticulturist will also manage the workers who work in the Vineyard.

Job Duties: Viticulturist

  • Calculating yield based on the amount of fruit used in each batch of wine
  • Conducting research and developing new wine blends based on consumer trends or special occasions
  • Evaluating vineyard conditions, such as soil quality and exposure to sunlight, to determine optimal grape growing conditions
  • Work with the Marketing team to create marketing materials such as brochures and brochures that promote the winery’s products and services to consumers
  • Participating in tastings and other activities to promote the winery’s products to consumers
  • Creating a budget for new wines, including labor costs for harvesting, processing, bottling, and shipping the finished product
  • Cultivating grapes or other ingredients used in making wine
  • Developing or maintaining relationships with suppliers of grape varieties or other ingredients used to make wine
  • Conducting wine tastings and other activities at events to promote the winery’s products to consumers

 

 

Requirements for this position include but are not limited to the following;

-          University degree or college diploma in agricultural management

-          5+ years Winemaker experience

-          Manager or Supervisor experience for day to day cellar and laboratory operations is required

-          Experienced in recruiting and management of vineyard and winery production employees

-          Experienced in government reporting and regulation adherence

-          Functioning knowledge and experience with Oneofoss analytical technology testing

-          Exceptional guest relations, comfortable with one on one guest and media relations. Good public speaker

-          In depth knowledge of Oak materials and their influence on the wine profiles

-          Winery production work will be the focus and viticulture work when needed

-          Previous winemaking or cellar management in a cool climate growing region

-          Previous experience in winery production and management 9,000 to 15,000 cases per year

-          Experience with Vitis vinifera grape varieties

-          Strong communication skills and attention to detail

-          Competence to run a crush pad; receiving grapes, pressing, crushing and destemming, cleaning, sanitizing and maintaining equipment

-          Proficiency in cellar tasks; tank/barrel cleaning and sanitizing, punch downs and pump overs, monitoring ferments, racking, transfers, additions, barreling up and down, blending, fining, filtering and bottling

-          Experience in monitoring grapes, grape sampling and lab analysis for maturity and harvesting

-          Experience in lab analysis and monitoring of wine aging, blending and stability

-          Ability to manage a team and work well as part of the team or individually

-          Must have a cooperative attitude and be flexible to changes and work hours

-          Willingness to expand knowledge base and practices and participate in vine and wine trials

-          Willingness to represent the winery at offsite or online events

-          Must be prepared to work in all types of weather and temperatures in Southern Ontario

-          Must be able to do physical labour and lift 25 KG

-          Forklift/ Tow motor certification  

-          Valid driver’s license is required

-          Tractor driving experience as well as equipment maintenance is encouraged
