Assistant Winemaker Job Description
Duties & Responsibilities:
-Assist head winemaker in designing, production and style of wines produced.
-Perform wine transfers, rackings, blending wines, bench trials, additions, finings and filtrations.
-Barrel operations including filling, racking, topping & blending.
-Should be able to perform lab analysis of musts & wines including brix, ph, ta, va, free S02, RS, Alcohol.
-Harvest processing including grape reception, tracking, destemming, crushing and pressing.
-Fermentation management such as yeast inoculations, nutrient adds, sampling, pump overs, punch downs, sugar monitoring.
-Bulk wine inventory management including tracking and recording of wine movements and additions.
-Knowledge of safe cellar practices, including safe handling of chemicals.
-Ensure that the cellar meets organizations sanitation standards & equipment is fully functional.
-Assist supervise seasonal staff at harvest, helping to determine priorities for daily & weekly work.
-Assist in training & development of seasonal staff.
- Work to ensure a safe working environment.
-Actively participate in the safety program.
- Adapt to changing working conditions.
-Flexible work schedule during key times of the year (harvest, bottling etc)
-Able to work alone at times.
-Able to perform mathematical equations.
-Knowledge of sparkling wine production including charmat method, forced carbonation and traditional method.
Qualifications:
- Post Secondary education in Winemaking and/or Viticulture
- 5+ years winery experience an asset
-Able to lift 50 lbs
-Forklift certified is an asset
-First Aid certified is an asset
