We are seeking an Ontario Vineyard Operations Manager to join our Winemaking Team, based out of our Trius Winery in Niagara on the Lake for a one year contract. As the liaison between winemaking and vineyard operations, the Vineyard Operations Manager is responsible for applying 'best in class' vineyard practices across all properties, as well as harvest planning and grape specifications for all APL table, sparkling and icewine programs. The Vineyard Operations Manager is responsible for running all Ontario APL corporate vineyards and vineyard leases and supports Grower Relations Manager with grape contracts in Ontario.
We are looking for a teammate with the following qualifications and experience:
- B.Sc. Agricultural/Viticulture, Enology or Food Science
- Three to 5 years' experience within a related field with a strong farming and viticultural background
- Proven technical understanding of vine and grape physiology with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Self-starter and highly organized with the ability to manage conflicting priorities and multiple tasks within tight timelines
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and influence others.
- Strong negotiation skills
- Knowledge of MS Office Suite, ABS, WIS, IPM, Regulatory Organic, Sustainability, ON VQA.
This teammate will be accountable for the following responsibilities:
APL Vineyard Operations
- Accountable for the profitable operations of all APL owned and leased vineyards
- Responsible for Capital and Operational budgets including monthly PMC reconciliation
- Establish, manage and develop APL block performance metrics for revenue, expense and qualitative measurement
- Provide viticultural direction to third party contractor for all vineyard operations including canopy and yield management, replants, IPM, pruning and cold weather management
- R&D trials to enhance vineyard performance and quality
- Conduct formal performance reviews and monthly reporting to third party contractor
- Manage monthly meetings with Manager of Grower Relations and Winemakers
- Liaise and undertake formal annual review with owners of all APL leased vineyards
- Responsible for participation and promotion of health and safety initiatives
- Manage SRED, OMAF, and OVIP projects
Harvest Grape Management
- Establish and execute grape intake strategy and schedule for Trius, Grimsby and Thirty Bench in conjunction with ON Senior Winemaker
- Manage timing and reporting of maturity control results to Winemaking
- Conduct daily scheduling meetings and confirm intake with site Winemakers and Manager of Grower Relations and Grape Supply
- Identify gaps in supply and submit recommendations through vineyard inspections and formal assessments
- Ensure all documentation and block identification is consistent and accurate within APL, Growers and GGO records
- Identify, inspect and manage all Sparkling fruit intake and provide direction to APL growers when required
- Manage and delegate all APL block inspections and scouting communicating findings to Winemaking team daily
- Provide assistance and direction to APL growers when required
- Arrange harvesting and logistics of all APL vineyards and maintain regular communication of vineyard status with third party contractor and ON Senior Winemaker
- Ensure all grapes are compliant with ABS grape specification and report any inconsistencies
- Identify and inspect Icewine and Late Harvest blocks with Manager of Grower Relations
- Provide weekly Icewine harvest updates to Winemakers and Manager of Grower Relations
- Supervise Icewine processing and coordinate intake
Quality & Supply IBP Support
- Review and manage ABS grape specification and intake protocols
- Review and reconcile WG, WC and WB demand with Grape MRP, Manager of Grower Relations and VP Winemaking and participate in grower reviews and critique performance
- Evaluate vineyard block quality and WG supply to WC demand throughout the growing season
- Identify gaps and submit recommendations to Manager of Grower Relations and VP Winemaking
- Establish and supervise premium program with Manager Grower Relations and VP Winemaking
