We are seeking a VQA Winemaker to join our Ontario Winemaking team for a one-year contract at our Trius Winery.

We are looking for a teammate with an Honours B.Sc. in Oenology and Viticulture or related post-secondary diploma/degree with a minimum of three years' experience in winemaking and cellar or vineyard operations. 

This teammate will be accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Execute all winemaking activities in conjunction with, Senior Winemaker, Trius Winemaker and Winemaker (Vineyard Operations) including but not limited to:
    • Harvest planning and logistics
    • Vineyard selection, field sampling, scouting and Winemaking trials
    • Grape quality assessment, harvest scheduling and fruit intake/processing
    • Determination of Process Stream allocation
  • Execute all winemaking activities in conjunction with the Senior Winemaker Ontario, Trius Winemaker and actively pursue cost savings and efficiencies in VQA formulations, ingredients, and winemaking processes and directly drive all VQA winemaking activities including but not limited to:
    • SOP creation and management
    • Crush Process Stream planning and execution, harvest strategy and training.
    • Fermentation management
    • Laboratory analysis as it pertains to bottling and spec adherence
    • Oak alternative/Barrel trials
    • Sparkling trials
    • Icewine juice assessment, selection and logistics
    • Inventory management as per Good Manufacturing and Winemaking practices
    • Blending/Stabilization/Filtration in accordance with Bottling schedule

  • Execute all winemaking activities in conjunction with Trius Winemaker, and Senior Ontario Winemaker relating to:
    • Product development and improvement initiatives
    • Capital planning, procurement and equipment commissioning support
    • Setting and revising product specifications
    • Determining the winemaking processes required to deliver the agreed to specs

  • In conjunction with the corporate Winemaking team
    • Manage the winemaking process for VQA brands regardless of the facility in which they are made
    • Actively participate in tastings and sensory panels
    • Determine and conduct experiments and projects and report back to the Winemaking team
    • Actively works to expand on an award winning VQA program
    • Actively promotes technical improvements in winemaking

  • In conjunction with the Planning Department and Trius Winemaker, VQA to ensure the delivery of wine to meet the agreed to VQA production schedule
    • Assist in the efficient management of a $2.4 million budget and full utilization of assets.
    • Management of invoices and POs

  • Communicate with Winemakers for VQA and ICB on status of programs and general Winemaking
  • Ensure the accurate reporting of winemaking movements in WIS / ASCP and subsequent LMS
  • Ensure all winemaking production reports and audits are performed and distributed on time as prescribed
  • Support public relations events as requested and directed
  • Maintain Environmental Health and Safety program as per corporate guidelines.
  • Maintain environmental program as per corporate guidelines.
  • Participate as a member of the National Oenology team
  • Participate in industry committees as required
  • Ensures a safe and healthy work environment through the effective operation of the Health and Safety program and joint H&S committee.
  • Assures the safety of employees through compliance with EH&S regulations and maintains an attitude that all incidents are preventable.
