Cellar Master (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

We are focused on making great wines.  Our winemaking practices include dedicated premium viticulture management, premium cellar equipment, a gravity flow environment, full time dedicated lab, expansive barrel program that permits patient supervised aging under ideal conditions in our underground caves.  Our systems are steeped in tradition and have developed over the years to best match our specific terroir and the wine styles we have come to be known for.  In the end, great wines are made by dedicated passionate people committed to the team, and that is where you come in.

Overview

The successful candidate will be the primary liaison between Winemakers and Cellar Team.  You will train, monitor and supervise inexperienced and experienced staff and be involved in all aspects of cellar operations including administration, scheduling, monitoring, and overview of equipment & monitoring systems.  Depending on your aptitude, you may also be relied on for lab oversight and sensory analysis.  You will be expected to contribute boots on the ground insights for efficiency and quality improvements, and will be provided increasing levels of challenge and responsibility as you become more familiar with our systems and approach.  

Management,

You will be a quick study with a level head able to handle pressure.   You will be open to direction and constructive feedback and offer the same.  Your approach to management will be first to support and then to “lead by example”.  English does not have to be your first language, but you will be a thoughtful communicator, able to listen and use straightforward language when responding, educating, providing feedback or instruction.  You will be asked to read and write written reports, and adjust schedules and priorities to match a dynamic and ever changing environment.  You will enjoy working hard physically, and mentally, but also have the patience to contemplate complex tasks without rushing.  Your approach to change will be methodical, analytical and well researched. 

Core Duties and Responsibilities

§  Supervise all stages of wine production, and apply appropriate handling and processing techniques required to produce premium quality wines.

§  Ensure the team you manage executes work orders as expected to uncompromised & successful completion.

§  Lead, mentor, coach, educate, and motivate the Cellar Team to maximize their potential through regular coaching, feedback and structured training

§  Coordinate bottling line operation as required; including staff management, material and supply requisitions, QC monitoring, equipment maintenance, labour requirements, finished goods shipping, production records and any other related details

§  Communicate with vineyard staff regarding vineyard operations and harvest logistics 

§  Ensure compliance with Company Policy as well as Federal, Provincial and Regional standards and regulations such as those required for the VQA designation.

§  Health & Safety: Oversee and implement Workers Compensation Board (WCB) and Corporate Health and Safety policies and regulations.

§  Be a champion for a safe and healthy work environment for employees, through eliminating hazards, training employees and promoting safety awareness

§  Coordinate and execute all crushing and pressing operations, including critical supply requisition.

§  Oversee and/or perform racking, inoculations, and cap management.

§  Vigilant oversight that winery systems are in exemplary operational condition

§  Maintain the highest levels of cleanliness and sanitation

Minimum Requirements (Experience, Education, Qualifications, Skills, Abilities)

§  University or advanced Oenology diploma or applicable Science Related Fields

§  5 years’ experience in a quality-focused Winemaking environment, with year-round cellar experience

§  International harvest experience 

§  A mechanical aptitude

§  Proven ability to work safely with production equipment.

§  Computer literacy.

§  Able to be on your feet all day, bend, kneel, walk and lift 50 lbs.

Commensurate with experience and ability.

Hours: Minimum 40 hours per week

Extended Medical and Dental Benefit package available after 3 months.
