We are seeking extraordinary, enthusiastic Lab/Cellar Technician to join our Tinhorn Creek Winery team. Tinhorn Creek Vineyards in Oliver, BC is one of the Okanagan's most innovative and environmentally sustainable estate wineries with an extensive health and safety program. We are a 450-ton winery in the heart of the South Okanagan wine region, with vineyards on both the Golden Mile Bench and the Black Sage Bench. We produce roughly 50:50 white and red, and our two unique vineyard sites allow us to grow both Bordeaux and Burgundy varietals in addition to a dash of Syrah and Gewurztraminer. We employ a basic and natural wine making approach and have a small but skilled team you would enjoy working with.

Reporting to the Winemaker, the Lab/Cellar Technician will support the South Okanagan Wine Team in all aspects of winemaking and lab analysis, including grape chemistry, fermentation, maturation, bottling, research, and trials to help achieve wine quality targets, and supporting the cellar team when it is required.

What you Offer:

  • Degree or Diploma in Food/ Wine Science, Chemistry or Related Science discipline and/or 2-5 years' experience in a related field
  • 2-5 years managing laboratory inventory and training personnel
  • Strong knowledge and experience of laboratory equipment
  • Knowledge of Analytical Chemistry and GLP
  • An interest and passion for the wine industry
  • Forklift operators' certificate and First Aid certificate level 1, Bonus points!
  • Understanding current COVID 19 Protocol as well compliance with work safe practices

What You Will Have Fun Doing:

  • Laboratory analysis including but not limited to: Wet Chemistry, Cold and Heat Stability, Enzymatic spectrophotometry, Microbiology: RT-PCR and Microscopy
  • Working with the Winemaker, interpreting and communication of lab results; maintain a traceable record keeping databases for South Okanagan wineries
  • Performing trials, tracking results from vineyard to bottle, including all laboratory, statistical and sensory analysis.
  • Continuous analytical and sensory evaluation of wines throughout production
  • Maintaining and calibrating Lab equipment, troubleshooting, purchasing all lab consumables
  • Performing and setting up bench trials; supporting the winemaking team during tasting sessions and completion of VQA analysis for BCVQA wine submissions
  • Participate in wine production tastings
  • Adhering to all GMP/HACCP and ABS protocols and helping South Okanagan wineries to achieve compliance
  • Performing cellar tasks as assigned, supporting winemaking team during bottling
  • During harvest assist in managing of fermentation, inoculations, yeast nutrition and all additions, as well train and supervise Harvest Interns in Cellar & Laboratory procedures
  • Following and encourage safe working procedures, adhering to all WHMIS protocols.
