Sebastian Farms is a family owned, vineyard operation growing premium organic grapes for a collection of wineries throughout the Okanagan. Our operation spans across the Okanagan Valley, with vineyards located in Lake Country, Kelowna, West Kelowna, Naramata, Oliver and Osoyoos. Our viticulture operation is dedicated to growing premium quality grapes, infusing sustainability into every aspect of our vineyards, and investing in the Canadian wine region.
Our Viticulture team is looking for a junior Soil Science Technician to support our continued drive of growing high-quality organic fruit in the Okanagan Valley. Alongside our Viticulture and GIS team at Sebastian Farms, this role will contribute an added depth of soil knowledge to promote our organic farming practices. Based in Oliver, British Columbia, the exciting opportunity will work with our vineyards throughout the North and South Okanagan.
What will you do?
· Actively maps our existing vineyards and new development land using an EM38
· Characterizes our soils (soil texture + chemical composition) by digging soil pits and comparing analysis with EMC data
· Works with the GIS team to use spatial analysis and build a library of our vineyard soils
· Works with viticulturists to build and manage our fertilizer program using both soil and plant based analysis
· Assist with key viticulture activities when required including but not limited to plant nutrition, irrigation management, and disease monitoring
Must Haves:
· Bachelor of Science in Soil Science, Environmental Sciences or related/equivalent program
· Minimum 2 years experience in agriculture or a soil related field.
· Strong knowledge and understanding of soil formations, classifications and characteristics
· Experience mapping soil electrical conductivity (EM38 or Veris)
· Working knowledge of GIS systems and data analysis – GIS courses are considered an asset
· Ability to work outside in inclement weather
· Experience operating ATV/RTV an asset
· Valid BC Driver’s License and clean driving record.
