von Mandl’s Newest Winery – Road 13 Vineyards

Based in Oliver, British Columbia, the heart of the South Okanagan Valley winemaking region, Proprietor, Anthony von Mandl has added Road 13 Vineyards to his family of Estate Wineries. Plans have just begun to transition Road 13’s existing production facility into a state-of-the-art facility built with equipment catered to its unique, winemaking philosophy. This new operation is one of 5 premium wineries owned by the von Mandl family, the common thread being exceptional, distinctive wines that will take their place on the world stage and build a legacy for generations to come. Road 13’s ability to produce such wines and gain recognition has been validated multiple times, most recently as #1 Winery at the 2018 National Wine Awards of Canada.

Road 13 vineyards are estate grown and organically farmed (certification in process) from vineyard designate blocks within the Southern Okanagan Valley.  The winemaking strategy is simple yet elegant; small lot production with state of the art, innovative winemaking techniques, utilizing small fermenters and the highest quality equipment to create unique terrior based wines.  The Winemaker will develop the unique style and direction of the wines; from farming practices through the entire winemaking process and have a hand in the construction phase of this state-of-the-art winemaking facility, placing the finishing touches on the production environment.

The Opportunity – Winemaker

Simply put, this an opportunity for a talented and cutting-edge Winemaker to be a key contributor in the re-design of the winery’s state of the art new facility. This talented winemaker will have the chance to make their mark in an emerging and pioneering region, which is continuously producing international award-winning wines.

As the Road 13 Winemaker, you are responsible for working directly with the Viticulture team, all winemaking, quality and operational activities and performing as a “hands on” leader.  The position requires an unwavering commitment to excellence and efficiency partnered with a willingness to get dirty and perform whatever tasks are necessary to accomplish the goals for this winery operation.  While participating in the development and execution of strategies to accomplish Winery and Brand objectives, the Winemaker will foremost be called upon to create luxurious and elegant wines. To support the wines in the marketplace and as a spokesperson, the successful candidate will present the Winery in a positive, passionate, and professional manner at all times with wine press, industry opinion leaders, sommeliers, and collectors.  They will work closely with Sales, Marketing and Public Relations personnel to maximize opportunities with the press, VIP consumers, and selected trade.

This position has the unique opportunity to participate in domestic and international travel and education as part of a ‘team’ of winemakers.  All of our wineries are unique and stand alone in vineyard management, winemaking and staffing, however the Road 13 winemaker will have the opportunity to travel, learn and network with the winemakers of the other four estate wineries.

Winemaking Philosophy

We strive to produce wines with New World ripeness and Old-World elegance. This is achieved in the vineyard through a mixture of old-world techniques, including 100% organic management and the integration of cutting-edge technology not seen anywhere else in Canada.  Moderating yields to suit the vintage's weather and harvesting at optimum ripeness is also essential to achieve the quality of wines that carry the Road 13 designation. In the winery, oak is used with discretion, in a supporting role, in order to add complexity and only on wines suited to barrique fermentation and maturation.

Wine quality in the Okanagan has risen to amazing heights in an astonishingly short period of time proving that, given the same passion, vision, skill and money that has been lavished on European vineyards for centuries, a young region like the Okanagan can indeed produce top-quality wines.

“I believe it is going to take my lifetime and beyond to realize the full potential of this incredible valley.”

The Okanagan Valley

Located 300km east of Vancouver, the Okanagan is located in a rain shadow caused by the Coastal Mountains. Rainfall is only around 10 inches/year, with hot summers and crisp winters. The southern part of the valley is actually the northern tip of the Sonora desert. The valley has been renowned for over a century for its extraordinary fruit, from apples to peaches, and cherries to apricots and more recently, exceptional grapes. The wines are a bridge between the New and Old world, with wonderful natural acidity balancing ripe fruit, wines that are elegant and made to pair beautifully with food.

One of the Final Frontiers in the Wine World

The Okanagan Valley is at the northernmost limit of wine making and vine growing in the world. Here, grape quality is ultimately enhanced by the vines’ struggle to give forth ripe fruit in a shorter growing season. The region has approximately 10,000 acres under vine, representing less than two per-cent of California’s vineyard acreage. Yet the varied growing conditions of this valley provide some exciting prospects for the individuality and diversity of character that discerning wine consumers demand.
