Cellar Assistant (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

Play Estate Winery is focused on producing exceptional small-lot wines and delivering outstanding guest experiences. We farm 14 acres and operate a boutique winery & restaurant.

The Cellar Assistant is a key part of our small but dedicated production team. This position reports directly to winemaker Stephanie Bryers and is involved in all aspects of winemaking from berry sampling, sorting, and processing fruit through to cap management, ferment, racking, transfers, barrel filling, lab analysis, and cellar sanitation. You will work with the winemaker daily and be Stephanie's right hand for all things. This is a unique learning opportunity for an eager student, or ideal for an experienced individual to take on a little more and dig in.

Supervises: n/a

Cellar and production work includes but is not limited to:

  • Receive and process all fruit at harvest under the direction of the winemaker from crush and pressing to fermentation, inoculations, punch downs, pump overs, nutrient and additions, etc
  • Cellar production work under the direction of the winemaker including monitoring and recording fermentations and wine progression, barreling, vessel transfer, racking, blending, etc.
  • With winemaker, work bottling line through to finished/packaged goods
  • Comprehensive cellar sanitation including but not limited to cleaning and sanitizing destemmer, press, pumps, tanks, hoses, barrels, and all winery operating equipment
  • Adhere to all safety protocols in accordance with standard operating procedures
  • Bulk wine inventory management and reporting
  • Winery equipment and asset inventory management, including coordination of general maintenance as required and/or in accordance with equipment maintenance schedule
  • Vineyard development and supervision / liaison including mapping, cross-training, and assisting winemaker of implementation of strategic plan to achieve increased production goals
  • Packing and shipping/coordinating DTC orders
  • General facility upkeep
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Safe operation of cellar forklift and other winery equipment

We require:

  • legally able to work in Canada
  • 1-3 years experience in the cellar or vineyard
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks with ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • Adherence to safety and operational procedures
  • Ability to lift 25Kg, repetitive mostions/tasks, long periods standing
  • Great attitude and flexibility to work extended and/or irregular hours
  • Canadian Drivers License (required) with ability to drive with a trailer an asset.

Longer hours at harvest and into crush are expected with some weekends throughout the year.  Compensation will be based on experience.
