Job Summary
The Director of Education is responsible for the leadership, implementation and management of delivery of all Wine & Spirit Educational Trust (WSET) and Wine Scholar Guild (WSG) programmes at IWEG. This position strongly contributes to IWEG’s overall objectives of delivering successful programs, taught by passionate and knowledgeable adult educators, yielding strong pass rates, a high degree of student satisfaction, and maintaining the organization’s strong brand image within the wine, spirits and sake community.
Job duties and responsibilities
· Conducts a review of all WSET and WSG course delivery and course results (pass rates, attendance records, etc.) on a semester basis, to determine whether the expected learning outcomes are being successfully achieved. Makes improvements, based on the identification of gaps in delivery of all programmes at IWEG
· Responds to regular updates of WSET and WSG courses with adjustments to IWEG delivery models and materials, as necessary
· Supports WSET and WSG courses and program delivery with instructional aids (session plans, materials, activities), and student resources (study aids, self-assessment tools, study skills/review sessions), as necessary
· Recommends WSET and WSG course delivery schedules on a semester basis, with respective allocations of instructors, for approval to the Executive Director (ED)
· Plans and designs new programs and other educational initiatives in conjunction with IWEG staff and partner organizations, such as the Wine Council of Ontario, Wines of Chile and Wines of Portugal.
· Assists with the hiring, training and retaining of instructors, including: conducting annual instructor observations and evaluations as required by WSET, as well as reviewing student feedback questionnaires for each course delivered at IWEG, recommending improvements and action as required to the ED
· Develops resources (networking, coaching, workshops) that support new and senior instructors of all IWEG’s WSET and WSG programs (as well as partner programs such as Wines of Chile and Wines of Portugal Academies), where IWEG provides instruction, suggesting budget allocation appropriate for current priority objectives
· Acts as the Lead Instructor for WSET Level 3 Award in Wines, coordinating and coaching the instructor delivery team and determining scheduled office hours to counsel students as necessary
· Communicates as necessary with WSET and WSG educational teams, and IWEG Directors, staff, instructors and students and as an integral part of IWEG’s management team participates in monthly management meetings and addresses challenges, if any, in the delivery of educational programs.
· The Director Of Education may also be called upon to perform other educational tasks as may from time to time be required by the ED.
Qualifications
University Education, Bachelors/Master’s Degree in Adult Education highly desirable
WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines and Spirits is mandatory; Wine Scholar Guild certifications (French Wine Scholar and/or Italian Wine Scholar) desirable.
Knowledge of office-related computer programs – Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
Performance Criteria
Proven team player with positive, collaborative, working relationships with all relevant groups: Members of the IWEG office team, IWEG Directors, instructors, partners (WSET, WSG, etc.) and current and prospective students.
Strong analytical, critical thinking, planning and problem-solving skills, specifically the ability to assess student needs and plan the correct approach to meet these needs
Strong project management skills to keep educational programs and projects on track
Excellent communication, listening and conflict-resolution skills, with the ability to facilitate dialogue among instructor and student stakeholders
Ability to multi-task and be sensitive to deadlines
Demonstrated knowledge of the application of information technology to the delivery of educational courses to enhance the student learning experience, will be an asset
Working conditions
As at October 2018, this position is classified as ‘part-time’, i.e. 32 to 48 hours per month.
