The IVSA Executive Director (ED) plays a pivotal role in shaping and implementing a strategic vision outlined by the IVSA’s Board of Directors. This leadership position involves fostering collaborations with various industry entities, provincial government officials, Provincial Liquor Boards, and Liquor Licensing bodies, as well as engaging with the diverse industry membership to achieve shared objectives. The ED, reporting directly to the President and the executive body of the IVSA, spearheads initiatives that drive the organization's mission and goals forward.

 The role of the ED requires a person who is dynamic, fluid, and flexible. Some weeks during peak season will require extra effort, while some weeks may be less time required but over the course of the year, the demands of the role will average 30 hours per week. The hours required are not fixed, but some events are outside of regular working hours, and therefore, some work time can be the discretion of the of ED, but with a clear understanding of deliverable deadlines.

 Role Description

Written and Verbal Proposals:

▪ Detailed proposals to AGLC, BCLDB, BC Liquor Stores and Provincial Government

▪   Regular communication to membership via monthly updates and newsletters

▪   Management of media queries and statements from the membership

▪   Increasing the visibility of the association through media and public speaking

▪   Organizing General Meetings and creating agendas 

▪   Working through meetings in an efficient manner – ensuring everyone stays on track and gaining consensus from the board on outstanding issues 

▪   Written and oral responses to membership queries 

▪   Work with Executive Assistant develop meeting minutes 

 Administration:

▪         Oversee planning and execution of the IVSA New Product Salons

▪         Retain and increase association agent membership base

▪         Retain and increase association industry and consular membership base

▪         Promote IVSA events and raise sponsorship funds

▪         Effectively manage the budgets as set out in annual budgeting meetings

▪         Work with Executive Assistant closely in distribution of news

▪         Supervise and supply direction to the IVSA Executive Assistant on regular basis

▪         Production and distribution of IVSA minutes

 Lobbying

▪         Retaining ongoing dialogue with key government and Liquor Board personnel

▪         Determining and approaching allies for shared interests and goals that benefit the industry

▪         Effectively using media to educate the public while solidifying positions and opinions

▪         Working with related associations to determine ‘common ground’.

 Relationships

▪         President and co-chairs and the rest of the executive body of the IVSA

▪         Key internal interactions: Executive Assistant, Accountant

▪         Key external interactions: Agent Members, Associate Members, Consular representatives, Vancouer International Wine Festival, BTAP, CAfRD, Ministers responsible for AGLC and BCLDB, Liquor Licensing Dept., key retail accounts, on premise buyers of liquor, Liquor Board staff, and service providers such as 3PL partners: ContainerWorld, Connect Logistics, Hillebrand Gori, Albatrans, and Drinx Logistics.

 Membership

▪         Must be able to effectively recruit new import agents to join the IVSA in Western Canada

▪         Maintain positive relationships with members to ensure retention

▪         Recruit and sell the benefits of joining to associate members (logistics, warehousing, etc.)

▪         Promote “Value for Membership” to IVSA members, and be able to effectively demonstrate the benefits of membership to prospective and existing members

 Meetings-Public Speaking

▪         Keynote speaker at related industry functions

▪         Participation, execution and lead of IVSA Executive meetings

 Skills and Knowledge:

▪         Basic knowledge of the alcoholic beverage industry in Western Canada

▪         Full understanding of lobbying process and how to frame arguments for government decision-makers

▪         Independent self starter

▪         Proven negotiation skills and ability to gain consensus from a large group

▪         Prior experience of working in or for regulated industries

▪         Proven skills as a facilitator

▪         Ability to analyze data and information and report on trends, implications of that data

▪         Understanding of needs and goals of import agents

▪         Able to analyze situations and propose or negotiate workable solutions

▪         Computer skills using Email, Word, Excel and Powerpoint as well as automated mail systems

Must be ale to independently take action and launch new initiatives or react quickly to sudden changes in the industry environment.'

This position can be based anywhere in Western Canada. Preference towards candidates based in Vancouver or Victoria.

 

 The role shall be performed remotely. There is no physical office, however attendance will be required at many in-person meetings occurring in Greater Vancouver (frequently), and also on occasion in Victoria, Edmonton and Calgary.

In accordance with the Pay Transparency Act, the expected salary range for completing the 30 hours per week is $70,000 to $80,000 per year – based on prior experience.
