DESCRIPTION

Mission Hill Family Estate Winery is looking for a high-potential leader to contribute to our award-winning winemaking efforts, by executing the overall operations plan and providing leadership in our Production department at Mission Hill Family Estate Winery. Reporting to the Senior Operations Manager, the Operations Supervisor will manage the day to day activities in the Production Cellar, championing a safe work environment, ensuring work orders are completed, cellar priorities are achieved, quality standards are achieved, and standard operating procedures are followed at all times. The Operations Supervisor will lead a team of unionized employees with a strong focus towards continuous improvement in quality, process, equipment, and maintenance.

You have 3-5 years of cellars experience. You have a good understanding of cellar operations, winemaking equipment and techniques, food safety programs, quality-focused manufacturing processes, and take pride in your ability to foster strong working relationships. Your operational abilities and knowledge are balanced by your high level of interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to motivate employees and navigate difficult conversations. OPERATIONAL EXECUTION:

  • Manage the workflow and performance of hourly employees in the cellar department.
  • Develop, implement and report productivity and performance metrics, recommend ways to continually improve these metrics.
  • Work closely with winemakers in setting work priorities.
  • Lead in the coordination of grape receival and processing during harvest
  • Hold personnel accountable to follow strict standard operating procedures throughout the completion of all work. Provide appropriate levels of initial and follow up training on the SOP’s
  • Work closely with the maintenance department to ensure maintenance activities are coordinated with production activities.
  • Participate in the development and management of departmental operating and capital budget.
  • Oversee winery Organic’s program.
  • Participate in the implementation and installation of capital projects.
  • Train as support and backup to the Operations Manager and Packaging Supervisor
  • Work with the Operations Manager around Labour Relations while continuing to foster a positive union-management relationship at MHFE.
  • Work cooperatively with the Administration/Retail/Hospitality departments in order to facilitate customer service objectives.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe, clean and organized cellar at all times.

TEAM & LEADERSHIP:

  • Participate in the recruitment, training, development and motivation of the operations and production teams and implement a culture of teamwork and employee involvement to optimize individual and team performance.
  • Execute the Mission Hill Safety program including; new hire orientation and documentation, training on new jobs/equipment, safe work practices, hazard identification and tracking and currency of training certification and tickets. Ensure any changes to process from a safety perspective are communicated to the team clearly and timely.
  • Provide motivation, training, guidance and coaching to hourly employees, ensuring performance and quality standards are achieved at all times. Execute annual performance review for hourly team.
  • Ensure all employees receive appropriate training for their position, changes in operations and new practices or processes.
  • Responsible for regular crew talks, safety crew talks and their appropriate documentation.
  • Ensure all facets of the Winery Safety Program are understood and followed by employees

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate or Technical Degree in Winemaking, Operations, Science, or equivalent
  • 3-5 years direct supervisory experience in a winery or other Food and Beverage Operation
  • Progressive experience in a manufacturing, including experience managing teams and driving results through hands on work with direct reports.
  • Advanced computer skills in MS Office, Excel, Relational Databases, Plant Process/Automation and Web Based systems.
  • Knowledge of winemaking and manufacturing machinery.
  • Strong execution/project management skills and a proven ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Engineering mindset with proven commitment to continuous improvement of systems, processing, quality, and technology.
  • High intensity team player who thrives in a fast paced, high intensity dynamic environment.
  • Experience with HAACP or equivalent food safety program implementation and maintenance.
  • Experience managing in a unionized environment.
  • Proven commitment to safety with a clean safety record.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Indoor office and winery environments.
  • Outdoor winery and vineyard environments.
  • Typical schedule will be Monday-Friday, but will vary depending on season and winemaking needs. Extended hours as well as evening and weekend work will be expected during high production seasons and harvest.
  • Ability to work actively on your feet for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to navigate stairs comfortably and lift up to 50 lbs
