We are looking for an Assistant Winemaker to contribute to our award-winning winemaking efforts. Under the general direction of the Chief Winemaker and Winemaker, the Assistant Winemaker assists and participates in the execution of all winemaking activities at the Mission Hill Family Estate facility related to the production of specific wines in both our British Columbia wine portfolio (VQA) and our International Wines (ICB).

Day in the Life of our Winemaker:

 

• In collaboration with the other winemakers, issues Vintrace work orders for cellar activities.
• Under the direction of the Chief Winemaker and White Winemaker, manages the activities for VQA white and ICB white wine to Canadian Organic, VQA, HACCP and highest quality standards.
• Coordinates winemaking operations for specific VQA and ICB wines to include blending, stabilization, and bottling.
• Coordinates fruit intake and generates work orders during harvest:
• Liaises with the winemaker, oenologist and crush crew for fruit receival.
• Ensures that the fruit is processed as specified to the correct press and tank.
• Monitors pressing progress and tastes juices and wines at the press to make press cut decisions.
• Supervises white juice rackings to ensure that they meet quality specifications.
• Assesses sorting on optical sorter and ensuring desired level of sort is achieved.
• Monitors white and red tanks
• Conducts sensory assessment of settling tanks, cold soak tanks, white aging tanks and white and red ferments.
• Communicates any quality concerns or issues to the Chief Winemaker/winemakers.
• Checks automated red pump overs are working and adjust as needed.  Monitor punch-downs
• Participates in daily tastings and blending sessions with the winemaking team and assisting the winemaker with other projects when needed
• Assists in the development of procedural and quality control policies and manuals.
• Builds and cultivates a strong relationship with the cellar team, leading by example and ensuring fluid and consistent communication occurs. 
• Participates in VIP/staff educational tours and tastings.
• Special projects and other duties as assigned. 

What We’re Looking For:

• Bachelor’s Degree (B.S) in Enology, Fermentation Science or related field from a recognized university.
• Minimum 2 years of Harvest and cellar experience.
• Highly motivated, organized, detail oriented, flexible and able to work independently and in a team environment.
• Strong computer literacy, experienced with MS Office (excel and word) and the ability to learn and use company wine inventory system (Vintrace).
• Passion for making high quality, organically certified wines.
• Drive for continuous improvement and innovative ideas.
