Under the direction of the Winemakers, the Harvest Assistant Winemaker will provide winemaking and quality assurance support for the Winemaking Team, aiding the Winemaking Team in overseeing many of the harvest operations.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
o Coordinating fruit intake
o Liaising with the winemaker and lead hands/crush crew for fruit receival
o Ensuring that the fruit is processed as specified to the correct press and tank
- Monitoring pressing progress and tasting white juice to make press cut decisions
- Tasting red wine at the basket press and making press cut decisions
- Supervising white juice racking’s to ensure that they meet winemaker specifications
- Assessing sorting on optical sorter and ensuring desired level of sort is achieved
- Monitoring white and red tanks
o Conducting sensory assessment of settling tanks, cold soak tanks, and white and red ferments
o Communicating any quality concerns or issues to the winemakers
o Checking automated red pump overs are working and adjust as needed. Monitor punch-downs
- Approving empty barrels to ensure they are sound before filling
- Providing work order guidance to the cellar crew
- Participating in daily tastings with the winemaking team and assisting the winemaker with other projects when needed
- Preparing work orders
Job Requirements:
o Degree in Oenology or Food Science is required
o Minimum of 3 harvests completed, international harvest considered an asset
o Previous experience working in wineries of various sizes is required
o Preference given to candidates who have experience executing the yearly winemaking cycle at a single winery
o Must be eligible to work in Canada
o Successful candidate must have reliable transportation and will be responsible for finding accommodation
o Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with all team members
o Open, honest and trustworthy
o Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects at one time
